Rootstock

Locally Sourced Dinner, Libations, Farmer’s Market and Evening of Entertainment

Food Water Wellness Foundation and Fallentimber Meadery have teamed up for Rootstock, a field to table farm-fresh experience, on August 13, 2016, from 5pm until midnight. All proceeds from ticket sales go towards building an online ecological/regenerative agriculture portal and, by extension, a viable local food system.

Hosted by Fallentimber Meadery in Water Valley, Alberta, this celebration of the best in regional food, drink and amazing music is being hailed as the “event of the summer.”

“Rootstock will showcase local farmers and the contribution they make to environmental stewardship while growing healthy food,” said Food Water Wellness Director Kimberly Cornish. “It’s a great opportunity for food lovers to break bread with producers, to learn exactly where their food comes from, and to understand the connection between local food production and a healthy planet.”

Upon arrival, guests will be welcomed to a farmer’s market by local growers showcasing their products and a cocktail hour with libations from Fallentimber Meadery, Eau Claire Distillery and other local breweries, while enjoying performance by singer/songwriter Beyries.

Fallentimber Meadery, which is a co-presenter of this year’s Rootstock, is also an exemplar of the regenerative practices Food Water Wellness advocates. From their start as a small beekeeping operation over four decades ago, to their present incarnation as the producer of an ancient beverage with a modern appeal, Fallentimber demonstrates that the values of local production and good stewardship can lead to great outcomes for producer and consumer alike. “As our fan base continues to grow, so do we,” said Nathan Ryan, owner of Fallentimber. “Fermenting the honey we work passionately to produce has brought a new level of creativity, sociability and sustainability back to our family farm.”

Rootstock will feature dinner prepared by Chef David Cousineau of the Bison Restaurant and Terrace, located in Banff, Alberta. The salad course will be orchestrated by Barb Thomas from Love2eat and desserts will be crafted by Chef Michael Tilley, of Rouge named the top restaurant in Calgary by Avenue Magazine. The chefs delicious creations will be served in a tent furnished with a mix of vintage china, white table cloths, straw bales, fresh flowers, candlelight and mason jars for the country-chic ambience that is the essence of Rootstock.

The event will also feature a unique silent auction and raffle of reclaimed and/or locally made products.

Reuben and the Dark return to their native Alberta to headline Rootstock following a sold-out tour with Vance Joy earlier this year. This will be an amazing opportunity to hear them play their alternative rock anthem, “Bow and Arrow,” in the foothills of the Rockies, under the stars. They are supported by Gabrielle Papillon, who was hailed by the CBC’s Tom Power as one of the “finest new songwriters in Canada.” Papillon’s performance is sponsored by Du Plooy Law, Calgary. Opening the show are Dominique Fricot, Benjamin James Caldwell, Olaaf Caarls and Pieter Van Vliet, four talented solo musicians who play together as The Folk Road Show.

Rootstock is about more than food, music and fun. It is an opportunity to support Food Water Wellness in building a truly viable local food system that produces sustainable livelihoods, nutrient-rich food and environmental regeneration. The mission is to transform the way we produce food, advance the use of regenerative agricultural practices and make regenerative farming a profitable, logical choice for our food growers.
