Meet Kim and Sheldon Burton of Mosaic Farms in Cro

Meet Kim and Sheldon Burton of Mosaic Farms in Crossfield, Alberta! This year they joined our Business Mentorship Network, and with the help of their mentor, Mike Kozlowski of Steel Pony Farm, they crafted a crop plan, modified an ATCO trailer to be a walk-in cooler, and built community with other small farms in their area through the mentorship program.⁠

"The mentorship experience that empowered me the most as a new farmer was connecting with a community of both experienced and novice farmers. This sense of belonging allowed us to engage in meaningful conversations, exchange ideas, and discuss challenges with like-minded individuals who share similar interests, values, and goals."⁠

Young Agrarians is seeking farm business mentors in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba!⁠

Are you an experienced farmer wanting to give back to the next generation? Is farm business planning, cashflow planning and business strategy your jam? Do you get excited about goal setting, record keeping, financial analysis and market research? Do you love listening to and supporting others on their learning journeys to reach their goals? If you answered yes, you might be a great fit as a Farm Business Mentor.⁠
⁠
Business development skills and navigating business start-up is one of the biggest challenges facing new farmers. The Young Agrarians Business Mentorship Network provides new farmers with an opportunity to build their business knowledge and use it to grow their farm operations to achieve long-term viability.⁠
⁠
Cultivate your leadership as a mentor, and put your hard-won skills and experience to use in coaching new farmers to achieve their goals. We offer a brief online Mentor Training program to support you to develop your mentoring/coaching skills in the context of farming.⁠
⁠
Time Commitment: approximately 30 to 35 hours primarily in the winter/spring planning season with check-ins throughout the growing season and a wrap up process in the fall. This is a paid hourly position.⁠

🌱Mentor applications are accepted year-round.⁠
🌱Mentee applications are now open. The deadline to apply is October 31st, 2024⁠

What an incredible day 🌞 We recently gathered on Quw’utsun territory to witness the beginnings of the Quw’utsun Estuary Food System Revitalization Project. Almost 40 people came out on this sunny fall day to visit the site and to hear from Jared Qwustenuxun Williams, Dr. Jennifer Grenz, Nava Sachs, and Alyssa Zandvliet of the UBC Indigenous Ecology Lab, Tom Reid and Steve Henstra of Nature Trust, and Jill Fraser of Satinflower Nurseries about the project.Before this beautiful place was taken over by colonial settlers in 1863, the estuary was like a grocery store for surrounding villages, providing food and medicine in such abundance that it supported a population of over 25,000 people, with extra to trade. Since then, the land has been diked, drained, filled, rivers moved, and habitat destroyed to make way for log shipping and storage, construction, growing hay and corn for cattle, and more.This site will be finally restored to its historical agricultural use, healing the community and habitat along the way. The plan is to restore natural water processes to the area, and plant acres of Indigenous food and medicinal plants. But instead of limiting human interaction like in a typical protected area, people will be involved in harvesting and stewarding these plants, fostering food security and connections to the land for generations to come. We are so excited to watch this project unfold!Our hearts are full after a day of learning and unlearning, song, and stories. Huge gratitude to all the facilitators who made the day possible.The project will be seeking volunteers to plant later this fall and into the future.
