ABOUT THE LAND
This opportunity is on 43-acres of ALR land near Black Creek, BC. The land is mostly treed, but has a 4 acre pasture that is presently in hay. The pasture has the potential to accommodate market gardening and livestock, and the owners envision an agroforestry component in the future.
At present, the property is totally off-grid – no grid power, nor municipal water. There is a shallow well that is capable of supplying enough water to irrigate the pasture as well as provide potable water, and we will be installing a water system to support this. There is a small cabin with a wood-burning stove that the owners stay in when they are there, and there is a composting toilet system. There is also a large open-air shelter and a small storage shed. The location is midway between Courtenay and Campbell River, and within walking distance to the central commercial area in Black Creek where there are a farm and feed/lumber store, a gas station, and diner. Miracle and Saratoga Beaches are within 5 km, and Mount Washington is about 30 km away.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The owners live and work in Victoria, and visit the property on weekends and holidays. They hope to move permanently to the site when they retire in 5-10 years. They would welcome someone to farm the property, especially if the farmers share the owners’ ambitions of improving the land toward greater productivity and diversity. The owners would be willing to invest in some permanent infrastructure that would support agricultural activities. A collaborative, long-term arrangement is a possibility for the right person or couple. Living onsite in a yurt, RV, or small cabin is an option.
QUALIFICATIONS, AND GET IN TOUCH!
The ideal person or couple would be young and adventurous, and interested in farming according to permaculture principles. Having previously taken a Permaculture Design Course would definitely be an asset.
If this sounds like a good fit for your farming aspirations, please contact the owners, George and Laura Peterson.
