Glenora Farm in Duncan, British Columbia is seeking a Maintenance Worker!
ABOUT Glenora Farm
Glenora Farm is a 97-acre mixed organic and Biodynamic farm on mostly sandy loam soils, consisting of 35 acres of pasture and hay fields, a flock of East Friesen dairy sheep, a small herd of Dexter beef cattle, chickens, turkeys and ducks, a 2 acre intensive mixed annual vegetable and perennial garden, two hoop houses, large compost facility, herb garden and greenhouse, and an onsite day program for adults with special needs.
The certified organic & biodynamic Farm and Gardens primarily support the food needs of this onsite community of ~50 people. We market our products at the local farmers’ market, through a local online farmers’ marketing cooperative (Cow-op.ca), and to various local grocery stores, restaurants, and food carts.
Glenora Farm is owned and operated by the Ita Wegman Association of British Columbia for Curative Education and Social Therapy and is one of two Camphill Communities in Western Canada, where adults with Special Needs (Companions) live, work and learn together with their caregivers (Coworkers). All Companions develop skills, efficacy, and confidence through empowering day program “workshops” (classes/activities involving farming, life skills, arts, and culture) provided daily Monday – Friday.

Engages with contractors on projects as requested by the Maintenance Manager.
Time and Task Management: uses time effectively in order to accomplish workload while prioritizing tasks as needed. Takes ownership and responsibility for the quality of the work they produce. Reviews, understands, and follows all Glenora Farm policies and procedures, as well as professional standards and regulations.
Organization: assess situations to determine the importance, urgency, and risks, set priorities, and support the work of the Maintenance Manager to develop a work schedule. The Maintenance Worker monitors progress toward goals, and tracks details, data, information, and activities.
Teamwork: works respectfully, cooperatively, and effectively with others to reach a common goal. Observes and understands team needs and dynamics and is able to problem-solve with team members in a timely, respectful, and proactive manner.
Leadership: maintains a professional and positive disposition even in challenging situations. Ability to seek new opportunities, identify gaps and contribute to Glenora Farm’s growth. Has knowledge of and the ability to model all Glenora Farm health and safety practices.
Problem-solving: perform troubleshooting to solve minor repair issues as needed.
Feedback: accepts feedback as a means of improving one’s performance and learning new and different methods and tools. Provides collaborative, proactive solutions and suggestions to the leadership team. Ability to take responsibility, perform reliably, and receive critical feedback/instruction.
A combination of education and experience in the following areas is preferred:
- Previous training and experience in a Camphill Community is beneficial
- Experience working with adults and/or seniors with intellectual, developmental, and physical diversity, brain injury, and age-related illnesses
- Understanding of ethical behaviour and business practices
- Demonstrate basic computer literacy, basic proficiency with Word, Microsoft Office, Xcel, email and internet
- Ability to adhere to a maintenance schedule
- Ability to troubleshoot
- Knowledge of structure or grounds to be maintained
- Knowledge of maintenance procedures
- Knowledge of systems to be maintained (e.g. Electrical, roofing, plumbing, water filtration, etc.)
- Ability to lift heavy loads
- Physical agility and manual dexterity
- Valid Occupational First Aid Level One
- A valid Class 5 driver’s licence and access to reliable transportation
- Class 4 unrestricted commercial driver’s licence
- National Safety Code Drivers Abstract
- Proof of double C19 Vaccination – Condition of Employment
- A Clearance Letter for Criminal Record Check specific to ‘vulnerable persons’ is required for this position (provided in-house upon hire).
- Current TB test (immunization documentation)
JOB TASKS
The Maintenance Worker reports to the Maintenance Manager and is responsible for supporting maintenance efforts across The Ita Wegman Association of BC (DBA – Glenora Farm). The Maintenance Worker supports all repairs and maintenance activities including the upkeep of residential buildings, property, utility buildings, equipment, workshop areas, and Glenora Corners (general store, and gas station). The Maintenance Worker endeavoUrs to ensure equipment and facilities are in good repair. They engage in a range of custodial and maintenance activities and identify areas for improvement for the Maintenance Manager to take care of issues.
GENERAL MAINTENANCE WORKER TASKS
- Maintenance schedules: adhere to maintenance schedules and respond to emergency calls for maintenance.
- Support maintenance initiatives: supports the Maintenance Manager in their efforts to make sure Glenora Farm residential buildings, property, utility buildings, equipment, workshop areas, and facilities are kept in good repair. Identifies areas for improvement and informs the Maintenance Manager of issues. Prioritises tasks to meet maintenance schedules.
- Project engagement: supports the Maintenance Manager with project planning. Supports work of the Maintenance Manager to build quotes on larger maintenance projects and engages with contractors on projects as needed.
- Events: assist with the setup and takedown of different events.
- Maintenance duties: performs troubleshooting to solve minor repair issues.
- Report Management: performs administrative tasks as required or requested by the Maintenance Manager, or Administration team.
- Safety: the Maintenance Worker ensures health and safety regulations are understood and adhered to.
JOB DETAILS
Term: Employment will commence as soon as possible. This is a permanent opportunity.
Hours per week: 24-35 hours per week.
Wage: $21.00/hour
