CSA PIck Up Day for City Beet Farm

We are Maddy and Elana and we are the new farmers at City Beet Farm in Vancouver. We farm on a dozen different properties in East Van, around the Riley Park neighbourhood. This summer we are growing over 70 types of veggies and cut flowers for our 22 week CSA program that runs from end of May to mid-October. Our land tenure model is pretty unique. We are very fortunate to have a community of homeowners who support our business and trade us the land around their homes for weekly vegetables. We came into farming from different angles but with … Continue reading Business Mentorship Network – Maddy & Elana, City Beet Farm

Toronto Farmers: We’re digging in!

8817832056_8485812ef2_z
Last fall I wrote about an upcoming urban farmer gathering happening in Toronto. Since then Toronto Farmers has officially gotten rolling and will be hosting its third social next week!

With some much appreciated funding from Carrot Cache (a grant funding program from Toronto’s excellent food co-op the Big Carrot), we will be hosting 2 social events and 4 on farm tours/workshops this year.

If your in/around Toronto or know an urban farmer in town, we invite all urban growers to come out next Thursday March 6th from 7-10 at Maizal for a speed meet-and-greet mixer!

Maizal is a fantastic Mexican restaurant and they have forged a lot of relationships with local growers. Ivan, one of the owners, even grows at McVean Farm, FarmStart’s start-up farm in Brampton, ON.

Check out their menu: http://maizal.ca/menu

This is a very gracious offer they have made because they are closing the restaurant to the public just for us. Currently, we are planning on having a cash bar and people can order off the menu, so come with a hungry belly! They also have a limit of 50 people for their space. We want to see a great turn out and need some hard numbers for this event so either:

RSVP on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1451127561783346/

OR

Email Jessica Gale jessica@freshcityfarms.com with your affirmation you are coming.

We strongly encourage that if you reply that your coming you really try your best to come out. Out of respect for the owners, we need to make sure our numbers are correct. Of course, stuff happens, but try to put this event in your calendar in pen, not pencil!

Look for future events in Toronto here or on our Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/torontofarmers

I’ll be sharing how things progress in Toronto as we go, here with Young Agrarians.

Can’t tell you how pumped we are for this event. If your in the GTA, come on out! We hope to see you there.
