From June to December 2021, Young Agrarians teamed up with four farms and six organizations and educators to present the Columbia Basin Farm Club event series, an on- and off-farm opportunity to learn together. Over 160 producers and farm-curious folks joined us over the course of the ten in-person and online events! EVENT RECAP: Virtual Business Support Session

On Monday, November 29, 2021, we hosted the ninth event of the Young Agrarians 2021 Farm Club series, a virtual business support and brainstorming session presented by Young Agrarians and the Basin Business Advisors. The session provided an online space with other farmers to bring up farm and business-related questions and chat them over with the hosts and group. EVENT RECAP: Kootenay Farms Food Hub Tour

On Sunday, November 14th, the eighth event of the Young Agrarians 2021 Farm Club series took place virtually, offering viewers at home a tour of the Kootenay Farms Food Hub in Creston, unceded traditional territory of the Yaqan Nukiy. This event was a collaboration with Fields Forward Society. The tour provided an inside look at the new facility providing access to community-based processing equipment at affordable rates and an opportunity to ask the Hub’s Project Manager questions by chat on Zoom. EVENT RECAP: Outdoor Flax Fibre Processing Workshop

On Sunday, October 3rd, the sixth event of the Young Agrarians 2021 Columbia Basin Farm Club series took place at Lakeside Park in Nelson, an outdoor, hands-on workshop all about flax fibre processing presented by Young Agrarians and the EartHand Gleaners Society. The workshop filled up quickly and 15 people spent the afternoon hearing from Jaymie Johnson, a member of EartHand Gleaners Society. Jaymie first grew flax for fibre in Vancouver in 2017 with the instruction of EartHand artists Sharon Kallis and Rebecca Graham. On October 24, 2021, more than thirty people met for the seventh event of the Young Agrarians 2021 Farm Club event series, Tool School 3.0 at Linden Lane Farms in Krestova, where we learned about the Kootenay Local Agricultural Society Tool Library and all the farming equipment that is available for rent. Kootenay Local Agricultural Society hosts three tool libraries across the Central Kootenay in Creston, Kaslo and Krestova at Linden Lane Farms, the host of our last Tool School event way back in 2019 and this year’s event. EVENT RECAP: Farm Tour at Bent Plow Farm

On September 27, 2021, Young Agrarians, Kootenay & Boundary Farm Advisors and Bent Plow Farm presented the fifth event of the Young Agrarians 2021 Farm Club event series, an evening farm tour and discussion at Bent Plow Farm in Blewett, BC, 10 minutes from Nelson. Despite the drizzle, 23 people showed up to tour the farm with owners and operators Emma and Scott and talk about the ins and outs of market garden production for CSAs, succession planting, irrigation, building soil and more. On July 26th, 2021, we hosted our second event of the Young Agrarians 2021 Farm Club event series, which took place virtually at Flyway Farm and Forest and the Spilli Station Cafe in Spillimacheen, B.C. Virtual Canning Workshop: ONLINE FOOD PROCESSING, PRESERVING & VALUE-ADD CAN-A-LONG

On September 19th, 2021, Young Agrarians hosted a virtual “can-a-long” all about food processing, preserving and value-add led by three enthusiastic teachers from the Central Kootenay region of B.C. The goal of the workshops was to provide hands-on skills to turn farm/garden produce into value-added products, learning three different ways to preserve the harvest, with tips for both the home kitchen and creating value-added products.
