Robin Mercy is the owner of Mr. Mercy’s Mushrooms. He lives and farms in Kaslo, BC with his partner Tamara and son Kirin. They produce strains appropriate for the local climate, from blue oysters and enoki in the shoulder seasons to white elms, lion’s mane, and reishi in the hotter months. Considering there is an estimated five million types of fungi, they hope to “stimulate curiosity and appetite in their clientele with an assortment of beautiful and unique gourmet varieties,” going beyond the white button mushroom. On November 29, 2018, the inaugural Food and Buyers Expo hosted by Columbia Basin Trust took place in Nelson, BC. The event brought together hundreds of people involved in food production, distribution and sales from across the region to participate in a day-long series of activities including workshops involving panel sessions, a networking luncheon and a trade expo. On Saturday, October 27th, 30 landowners and current and prospective farmers converged on the Creston & District Community Complex to talk land access, lease agreements and farming in the Columbia Basin. We saw a great turnout of both farmers looking for land and landowners, and the event welcomed a good mix of new and experienced farmers, including some farmers who are currently leasing or had leased land previously. People came out from as far as Shore Acres, Cranbrook, Harrop and Nelson and there was great local participation from Creston. Towards a Working Model for a Robust Regional Food Security Network On September 21st a group of representatives from the food, farming and policy worlds of the Central Kootenays converged on the Sunshine Bay Retreat Centre in Harrop for a day-long retreat consisting of two field trips to local farms, the regularly-scheduled council meeting, as well as a focus group.
