EVENT RECAP: Young Agrarians Columbia Basin Land Linking Workshop

On Saturday, October 27th, 30 landowners and current and prospective farmers converged on the Creston & District Community Complex to talk land access, lease agreements and farming in the Columbia Basin. We saw a great turnout of both farmers looking for land and landowners, and the event welcomed a good mix of new and experienced farmers, including some farmers who are currently leasing or had leased land previously. People came out from as far as Shore Acres, Cranbrook, Harrop and Nelson and there was great local participation from Creston. Towards a Working Model for a Robust Regional Food Security Network On September 21st a group of representatives from the food, farming and policy worlds of the Central Kootenays converged on the Sunshine Bay Retreat Centre in Harrop for a day-long retreat consisting of two field trips to local farms, the regularly-scheduled council meeting, as well as a focus group. Through this one-day intensive workshop with Nicole Masters of Integrity Soils, you’ll learn how to build soils to reduce the impact of extreme climate and decrease production costs. Participants will learn the fundamentals of soil management and practical skills such as conducting quick on-site assessments to monitor soil health.
