Young Agrarians is celebrating the tenth year of the Business Mentorship Network (BMN) program in BC and the second year of the program in the Prairies! If you are a new farmer or the next generation to take on your family farm and need support to figure out the business aspects of your farm consider applying for the 2024/2025 cohort. The BMN offers business mentorships to a diverse array of new and young farmers/ranchers/producers. Through one-on-one mentorship, peer networks and online workshops new farmers develop the skills necessary to operate ecologically sustainable and financially viable farm businesses. This farm tour is one you most certainly won’t want to miss! We’ll be visiting three farms that highlight the incredible diversity of producers in Central Alberta, including a haskap orchard, a rotational-grazing ranch and a hydroponics lettuce grower. During a walk around of each farm, the farmers will talk about about how they started up, how their operation is unique, their future plans for the operation, and share advice to people wanting to enter the industry. An exciting new post-secondary certification program is launching in BC at the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Williams Lake campus this coming January, and there couldn’t be a better time or place. The TRU Applied Sustainable Ranching (ASUR) program is the first of its kind in British Columbia, and located in the oldest ranching region in Canada – the Cariboo Chilcotin – where over 20% of the province’s cattle herd still resides.
