YA BUSINESS MENTORSHIP NETWORK – MOSAIC FARMS

Young Agrarians is celebrating the eleventh year of the Business Mentorship Network (BMN) program in BC and the third year of the program in the Prairies! The BMN offers farm business mentorship to a diverse array of new and young farmers. The mentorship is offered over the course of a year. Through one-on-one mentorship, peer networks and online workshops new farmers develop the skills necessary to operate ecologically sustainable and financially viable farm businesses. Regenerative Grain Farming Field Day with Canadian Organic Growers

On a sunny July day, participants from across Alberta and beyond gathered for a series of farm tours that showcased regenerative grain farming practices. These farms were located near Rolling Hills, Alberta, which is in the southern part of the province and within the irrigation district. First stop was a farm growing organic oats, potatoes, and hemp. They had been growing organically for over 20 years and their top piece of advice was to not worry about what your neighbours have to say as you transition and get through the learning curve of the first 5 years. Funding is available for farmers to support the transition to organic production! The Canada Organic Trade Association (COTA)’s Organic Transition Program assists organic producers financially for their added costs incurred while transitioning to organic farming.  With a booming $6.6 billion in sales, Canada is the sixth largest organic market in the world. Yet, demand continuously outpaces supply, despite double digit production growth. Two thirds of Canadians purchase organic products weekly and organic is the fastest growing part of the Canadian agriculture landscape.
