LAND OPPORTUNITY: Rabbits, Sheep, and Chickens on an Established 2-Acre Farm – Victoria, BC
We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.
ABOUT THE LAND
Located 15 minutes outside of Victoria, this semi-rural property has been home to a thriving small-scale livestock operation for nearly 4 decades. Over the years, the land has been used to graze sheep, raise hens, and breed rabbits for both show and meat.
The cultivable space consists of approximately 1.5 acres of sloping pasture that has been fully fenced to create a series of 5 paddocks. This site has a variety of farm outbuildings, including chicken runs, a rabbit barn, lean-tos for sheep, and an additional large barn for storage or processing farm products. There is also a small garden space at the front of the property that is available for use. Furthermore, the site has full access to municipal water and power!
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
This is an excellent option for a new livestock farmer who is looking for a transition opportunity on an established farm, with access to mentorship from an experienced producer! This would also be an appropriate opportunity for a more experienced farmer keen on finding land with access to local markets, ample water, and existing infrastructure to support the expansion of their farm business.
While the infrastructure on this site is geared towards sheep, chicken, and rabbit production, the landholder is also open to farmers who want to produce other types of livestock, including goats and pigs. This site may also be used to cultivate mixed vegetables or flowers, but the land would require some additional preparation to convert the pasture into field production space.
This site’s close proximity to Victoria provides a unique opportunity to blend city living with semi-rural land access. Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, is a small city with a thriving culinary scene, several well-attended farmers markets, and access to stunning seaside views!
ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate for this opportunity is a small-scale livestock producer interested in working with a landholder to transition into an established livestock operation. There is no housing available on-site, so the ideal candidate would also have access to their own accommodations close to the farm.
The landholder is keen on taking a collaborative approach to land sharing, as they would like to continue maintaining their own personal garden and small flock of laying hens on the site. Above all, the landholder values tidiness, fire safety, and careful land stewardship, with the goal of maintaining the agricultural viability of this unique space. As such, the ideal candidate for this opportunity would value open communication and would be excited to work closely with a landholder to care for shared spaces.
