Looking for land for small-scale farming in a community-oriented space? Approximately an acre of cultivable land is available on Akasha Farm, located on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, in Sechelt, BC.
The entire property totals 6.5 acres, including a couple acres of forested land. The landholders currently produce three main crops – garlic, raspberries and eggs – which they sell at their farm stand on-site. Akasha Farm is also home to a small agritourism operation (including three geodesic domes, which house guests) and an event space located in a barn on the property, which will soon include a commercial kitchen.
The available acreage consists of three separate plots, all of which have good soil and good sun exposure. There is a water license in place for a creek that runs through the property, and most of the necessary irrigation is already in place. Storage space is available for the incoming farmer, and there is some machinery on-site. The plots are easily accessible and ready for planting!
This property offers a great opportunity to grow crops while living on the land and connecting with the community. Many production types would be welcome, including vegetables, fruit, livestock, flowers and bees.
A private one-bedroom cottage is available for an incoming farmer. Rent can be offset by hourly caretaking duties: maintaining the farm’s daily flow; caring for the animals, including the livestock guardian Norwegian Elkhound who protects the chickens from predators (coyotes, bears, etc); managing guests for the agritourism operation, and keeping the property vibrant and thriving (in total about 25 hours/month).
The ideal candidate for this opportunity would be a farmer or couple who are grounded, reliable, self-motivated and have experience farming and caring for animals. This opportunity would be suitable for someone who has good communication skills and finds joy in early mornings and living the real farm life. Since there is already a farm dog on the property, it will not be possible to bring additional pets.
The landholders are ideally looking for farmers who are interested in taking on the caretaking duties in addition to cultivating the available half-acre space, however they are flexible and open to discussing an arrangement that will be suitable for all parties!
