We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

This scenic, sloped property offers 6 acres of land suitable for a variety of production types. The property is located within walking distance of downtown Ganges on Salt Spring Island, which is home to a vibrant community of farmers, foodies, and artisans.

The land has not historically been farmed and much of it remains uncultivated, with a heavy vegetation coverage including oxeye daisies, lupines, and perennial grasses. Over the past 9 years, the landholder, who is an avid gardener, has kept bees, established a small mixed orchard, and grown a home vegetable garden.

The soil on this site is a well-drained silty loam, and there is access to water from both a water catchment pond and an artesian well. While much of the land is heavily sloped, there is a terraced area beside the greenhouse that is appropriate for annual vegetable production. Other parts of the property may be appropriate for small livestock, such as sheep, chickens, or goats. There is also one large greenhouse on the site, which is used for home vegetable and flower production. Furthermore, there is road access throughout the property.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

This site is a blank slate and the landholder welcomes livestock farmers, market gardeners, orchardists, and beekeepers to reach out with their ideas.

The landholder would love to see the land used to support food security on the island, while also providing a new farmer with stable access to land on which to build their business. Above all, this landholder values good communication and would love to have a collaborative land sharing relationship with the incoming farmer, especially as the site requires work before it will be suitable for production.

Salt Spring Island combines rolling hills, rich coniferous forests, and stunning coastlines with a vibrant art community and a growing population of young farmers. There is an active Farmers Institute, as well as a land trust, two weekly farmers markets, a community abattoir, and a well-established network of farm stands on the island. This makes Salt Spring a supportive environment for folks looking to start a new farm business!

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

This opportunity is most appropriate for an experienced farmer who is interested in developing systems and has the vision and skillset necessary to unlock the potential of this sunny, sloped land. The ideal candidate would also be excited about creating a long-term land sharing relationship based in good communication and collaboration with the landholder.

Furthermore, as there is no housing available on-site, the ideal candidate would have access to their own housing on Salt Spring Island.
