LAND OPPORTUNITY: 2 Acres of Pasture for Livestock – Qualicum Beach, BC
We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.
ABOUT THE LAND
Located in Qualicum Beach, just off the Island Highway, this two-acre land opportunity is part of a 20-acre property composed of rich coniferous forest, marshy wetlands, and open fields. The property is included in the Agricultural Land Reserve and has been used to house a variety of livestock over the years, including pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, and ducks. The landholder has a large home garden and plans on establishing a small herd of goats in the next few years.
The available two acres include three fenced paddocks and two small barns – both of which have access to water and limited electricity. The water on this property comes from a combination of water catchment ponds and a well.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Although this property has a long history of commercial agricultural use, it has not been farmed in a few years, and the landholder is excited about partnering with a farmer to build back the site’s agricultural capacity. This landholder is an avid gardener and keen to foster a collaborative relationship, while maintaining their own food growing and land stewardship projects.
This site is most appropriate for small-scale livestock, such as goats, sheep, or poultry; however, the landholder is also open to a small herd of cattle or bees. They are not, however, interested in having pigs on the land.
In addition to the three paddocks and barn space, farmers may also utilize shared storage and tools on the property, including a small tractor. Furthermore, the barn comes with a silo for storing feed. While there is currently no housing on the property, the landholder is open to farmers bringing their own temporary housing, such as an RV or a tiny home.
ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The existing infrastructure, ample water access, and proximity to both the Errington and Qualicum Beach farmers markets make this an excellent opportunity for a new or experienced livestock producer! The ideal candidate would be keen on fostering a collaborative land sharing relationship with a landholder, while also being experienced enough to operate independently on the site. The ideal candidate would also be passionate about regenerative pasture management practices and humane animal husbandry.
Considering there is no housing available on-site, the ideal candidate would either have their own accommodations in the area or would be able to bring their own housing to the property.
Overall, this is an excellent opportunity to start or expand a pastured livestock farm, on a property with established infrastructure and access to local markets in the mid-island region!
