LAND OPPORTUNITY: Stunning property available for mixed production – Naramata, BC

We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

This beautiful ALR property on the Naramata Bench overlooking Okanagan Lake is now available for lease!

The options for production are diverse: there are currently peach, apple, plum, walnut and apricot trees spread across the property, as well as an established vineyard area, three grazing pastures, and additional arable growing space for vegetables or flowers. There are also bees already on-site (managed by a local beekeeper) to help out with pollination and healthy growth.

Historically, the land was used as an apple orchard and has also supported livestock. The current landholders have been caretaking the property since 2016 and would love to see it used for food or wine production.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The property is split into multiple defined sections, making this opportunity ideal for a mixed-use operation.

The wide variety of fruit trees are mostly spread across the property, with one concentrated peach orchard area spanning about 0.5 acres (approximately 100 trees). The vineyard area is approximately 1.5 acres, and is currently under contract but could become available over the coming years. The landholders are also open to more vines being planted, as the established vineyard has produced well. The pasture spaces are around 0.3 acres each, and would be best suited for smaller livestock, such as goats, sheep, or chickens. These pasture spaces offer a great opportunity for rotational grazing of a small herd or flock.

There is fencing installed for the pasture areas and peach orchard – the incoming farmer could also install deer fencing, if needed. There is also an irrigation system installed throughout the property, which would need some love to return it to full functionality. The landholders are open to working with the incoming farmer to repair and construct new infrastructure and ensure that the property can support a new farming operation.

Also included in this opportunity is the potential for housing during the growing season: there is RV space available on-site. The farmer would also have access to electricity and water for their housing and farming operation, as well as some storage space for equipment and tools.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The landholders are excited to see the property in production, and are eager to meet with farmers ready to take on a portion or all of the property. They are open to parceling the opportunity if a farmer is looking to run a specific type of operation on one portion of the property. The land is currently managed organically making it a great fit for an operation that requires organic certification, but the landholders are open to discussing other production practices.

The landholders and caretaker of the property would also be happy to share their own knowledge and help the incoming farmer find the expertise and support they need to succeed. Note that the farmer would need to have to access to their own tools and equipment.
