LAND OPPORTUNITY: 10 Acres of ALR Land on an Established Truffle Farm – Parksville, BC

We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

The Truffle Farm, established in 1999, is a unique 40-acre farm located in Parksville. Much of the property is used to cultivate Garry Oaks and Hazelnut trees, which are inoculated with the spores of the Black Perigord Truffle and used to produce the highly sought after mushroom for direct sale and use in value-added products. In addition to growing truffles, the landholders also breed Lagotto Romagnolos, a type of dog that has long been used by truffle harvesters in Italy!

The 10-acre field that is currently available on this property is fully fenced and has access to well water, as well as potential for access to electricity. This field is flat and has few rocks, but can get wet during the winters. It has historically been used for hay production and is currently being used by the landholder to graze their small flock of sheep.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Up to 10 acres are available on this property for a farmer with a strong business plan, good communication skills and a commitment to regenerative land management practices. The landholder is most interested in supporting a farmer looking to grow mixed vegetable crops, but is also open to small livestock, such as sheep or laying hens.

There are currently no farm structures in the field, but the landholder is open to a farmer building temporary structures, such as storage sheds or greenhouses, to support their business. Furthermore, while there is currently no housing available on the property, the landholder is open to a farmer bringing their own RV or tiny house and living on-site!

Located in Parksville, close to Little Qualicum Cheeseworks, this site gets a lot of traffic, making it an excellent spot for a farm stand. Farmers in this region are also well-supported by the Errington Farmers Market, the Qualicum Beach Farmers Market, a number of restaurants featuring local producers in Parksville and neighboring communities.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

This opportunity is most appropriate for an experienced vegetable or livestock farmer with a strong business plan and a willingness to collaborate with the landholder to support the development of infrastructure on the site, namely, extending power to the well that services the 10-acre field.

Considering there is no established housing on-site, the opportunity is best suited to farmers who either have off-site accommodation or are able to bring temporary housing to the farm site.

Overall, this is an excellent opportunity for a farmer looking to establish a year-round, financially sustainable farm business!
