FARM JOB: Keremeos, BC – Ntamtqen Community Garden & Food Hub, Community Garden Programming Development Officer

Ntamtqen Community Garden & Food Hub in Keremeos, British Columbia is seeking a Community Garden Programming Development Officer!

The core of this role is to take the lead on developing, administering, and ensuring the delivery of training, educational, and learning programming at Ntamtqen Community Garden & Food Hub. This includes but is not limited to opportunities for apprenticeships, student placements, Tea Creek I-FEAST training, short workshops, volunteering, and linking with school programs. The role will be in collaboration with the Manager, Coordinator, and Administrative Assistant at the garden and food hub to support planning and delivery. This role is centered on indigenous peoples’ participation in skill development opportunities and addressing barriers to their participation, and also provides opportunities for settler/non-indigenous people to be involved in the garden and food hub. The food hub partnerships and volunteers are key to this work. Ntamtqen works with a wide variety of people, so creating a culturally safe space is essential.

The programming is across a wide variety of food and farming skills and culturally embedded knowledge, protocols, and ceremonies of the Syilx people.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

  • Knowledge/Lived experience of Indigenous history and current experiences broadly, and more specifically of Syilx and Smelqmix history and culture.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous Food Security and Sovereignty.
  • Experience in planning a year-round program of training/learning/education, ideally
    related to land-based opportunities (and more specifically food and farming) for a diverse audience.
  • Experience in communicating and working with a wide range of people from all
    different backgrounds and experiences, ensuring a welcoming and safe environment and being professional when needed. This includes but is not limited to indigenous and non-indigenous people, community members with a variety of needs, partners from professional organizations, and volunteers donating their time and skills.
  • Experience working within a given budget and the ability to work with the Coordinator and Admin Assistant to administer and track the budget
  • Experience using the Microsoft Office suite and Outlook, ideally in a project planning capacity.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and able to work independently, with problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible as requirements and resources change or develop.

Useful Skills, knowledge and experience

  • Connection with Syilx ceremonies, practices, communities, and language.
  • Gardening/farming experience for supporting program planning and development.
  • Experience in developing indigenous food security projects or programs.
  • Experience using Excel/Google Sheets or similar to build project plans and task or budget trackers.

POSITION TASKS

  • To be familiar with the short and long-term visions and plans for the Garden, enabling clear communication within the team and with community members, partners, and clients of any programming.
  • Develop a work plan according to the needs and vision of the Garden.
  • Take a lead on the development and implementation of programming across a range of food, farming, and land-based skills and activities. This includes not only practical skills, but also teaching protocol, leading/organizing ceremonies, and supporting community events such as the seasonal Feasts and Powwows.
  • Work in collaboration with the Manager, Coordinator, and Administrative Assistant. Root programming Syilx and Smelqmix history and culture, with the aims of (1) revitalizing practices, protocols, and knowledge, and (2) educating the settler community in indigenous history and experiences. This supports decolonization and reconciliation/reconciliACTION range of people from indigenous and non-indigenous communities centered in the South Okanagan Similkameen region, and extending beyond to the whole Okanagan/Syilx territory, and other regions for outreach, shared learning, and partnership working. Building good rapport and relationships is essential.
  • Support ongoing evaluation processes to learn from experiences and make improvements onsite, and for wider shared learning.

POSITION DETAILS

Term: 1 year with the possibility for renewal.

Wage: $25/hour
