Under the Oak Farm in Duncan, BC is seeking occasional farm labour!

ABOUT Under the oak farm

We are an uncertified organic and permaculture farm. We utilized grazing, agroforestry, intensive market gardening, wildcrafting and permaculture food forests and polycultures. We purchased our land in 2015 and are still homesteading and building our infrastructure. We have a farm wide permaculture plan that we are slowly implementing and have equipment on farm regularly as we build roads and put in irrigation lines. We are close to town, if fact blocks from the new hospital. And we sell through our farmstand, cow-op, the Farmstore and some restaurants.

We ultimately are permaculture in our beliefs, but practice restorative agricultural practices in addition to our more permanent agroforestry and wildcrafting management methods. Family members run an intensive market gardening area with uncertified organic and no-till management and we also produce free-range and pastured eggs and soon poultry.

DESIRED QUALITIES

  • We are looking for a temporary farm worker that can evolve into a regular waged position and perhaps a resident.
  • This person would be open minded and able to interact with people of all religions and different backgrounds.
  • As more than one family lives on the farm, they will be vetted to ensure they are safe to be around children and being comfortable with large dogs is an asset.
  • Honesty, good communication and ability to do heavy labour are musts. We won’t ask you to do anything we aren’t willing to do ourselves, however we do a majority of our labour by hand.

POSITION TASKS

We need a farm hand that is willing to start with occasional help; building to a wage position with additional benefits in the future and as farm income grows.

Currently we need help to harvest, package and weed strawberry polyculture beds.

We pick and package first and once I can run into town to do food deliveries, additional time will be spent weeding and mulching beds. No machinery used in this process.

POSITION DETAILS

Term: This position begins in May and will continue as long as we have sufficient income from strawberries to pay their wages (likely September). This would be an annual position until such time as we are producing enough money to make it a more permanent position.

Hours per week: Currently 12hours per week. 3 days a week(M/W/F) from 7:30-11:30

Wage: $18 per hour. There is a possibility of an RV/tiny site with access to water and electricity. This would be rented out and it could be offset by us paying for farm sitting and other farm work.

We always have seconds of food on the farm, so there is a possibility of occasional food.
I am a retired Chiropractor with extensive reading and my permaculture certification, so I can teach you how all this works together as well teach building and other techniques.
