Young Agrarians is celebrating the eleventh year of the Business Mentorship Network (BMN) program in BC and the third year of the program in the Prairies! The BMN offers farm business mentorship to a diverse array of new and young farmers. The mentorship is offered over the course of a year. Through one-on-one mentorship, peer networks and online workshops new farmers develop the skills necessary to operate ecologically sustainable and financially viable farm businesses.

Meet a Mentee: Rayne Beveridge at The Yellow House Farm
My name is Rayne Beveridge, owner of Yellow House Farm, on the unceded, ancestral, and occupied traditional lands of the Kwantlen and Katzie Nations of the Coast Salish Peoples, also known as Maple Ridge, BC. Our mentor was Chris Bodnar, and our goals were to improve our organization, record keeping, financial literacy, and profitability.
Through our mentorship, we locked in our organization and record keeping and improved our literacy and profitability. We didn’t improve our profitability as much as we had hoped, but the improvements in our record keeping gave us the information we needed to identify where we were underperforming. That knowledge has now given us a clear path on how to improve our practices, procedures, and planning in order to achieve more effective results for the following season.
We found the ability to ask questions and look at our mentor’s data invaluable. Being able to see exactly how they organize their information and the tools and resources they’ve refined over the years gave us the opportunity to benefit from their year’s of hard work and development.
Through the mentorship program we definitely feel that we have a better understanding of how to operate a successful farm. We have a deeper knowledge of the industry, best practices, and most importantly the value of good data.
We’re more excited about this upcoming season than we’ve ever been. After a year of guidance and support we feel like we have the tools now to thrive and learn more effectively and efficiently than ever before.
