LAND OPPORTUNITY: Market Gardening at Snowshoe Creek Organics – Robson Valley, BC

Posted by Andrew Adams on March 13, 2024

We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

Snowshoe Creek Organics is situated on a scenic 500-acre property in the Robson Valley, bordered by the Fraser River along the south and surrounded by the beautiful Cariboo and Rocky Mountain ranges. Landholders Charles & Elizabeth have been gardening and farming on the land near for over fifteen years.

With generous rainfall and excellent silty soil, the landholders have produced abundant crops of organic vegetables, berries, asparagus, rhubarb and hay. They have also constructed and maintained infrastructure on the property, using their own timber. Currently, most of the property is forested or used for hay.

There is a diversity of habitats to support many species of wildlife: large predators and ungulates, and many species of waterfowl and predatory birds. Ample opportunities exist for wildlife viewing!

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

This is an excellent opportunity to share a one-acre garden plot, tools and machinery while living on-site and learning from experienced farmers!

The landholders aim to keep a small portion of the plot for their own personal use, while supporting incoming farmers to realise their own farming ideas. They are willing to share their knowledge, tools and machinery with skilled, passionate and capable young people, to help them grow their farm business.

Potential projects on the property include: fencing, greenhouse construction, repairs, gardening, weeding, watering, harvesting, wildlife enhancement projects and clearing walking trails. There are many opportunities for collaborative farming, such as the hay harvest. The landholders also welcome any other ideas to enhance and improve the land, and there is potential to expand the cultivated area beyond the current one-acre plot.

Road access to the property is regularly plowed and maintained, and the CN Railway runs alongside the property with a train stop at the driveway. McBride is located 50 km east and Prince George is 180 km west.

The landholders are open to a lease agreement for the upcoming growing season, with the possibility for extension. Accommodations are available in a cabin on the property for the right candidate.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate for this opportunity would be open to learning and interested in practicing biodynamic and organic principles. Since the incoming farmer will be working closely with the landholders, good communication and a positive relationship will be key.

Proficiency with tools for construction and mechanical repair would be valuable. Note that incoming farmers must have access to their own vehicle.

If you’re looking to start or expand a farm business while living on-site in a supportive environment, get in touch now!
