Join us at Manna Farm in Duncan (Vancouver Island), BC for our first Vancouver Island Land Social with a farm tour, potluck social, and discussion on farming on leased land!
Come get inspired and learn about the incredible farming that can be done on leased land! The South Island offers many exciting land opportunities – including Manna Farm, which is looking for a new farmer starting in the 2020 season though the B.C. Land Matching Program. Farmer Elia has built up a hugely productive and diversified farm in the 4 years she has been on these 22 acres, and we are lucky to be able to spend the day learning on-site about her experiences building the farm and business!
We will tour the farm, enjoy a potluck lunch, and take a dive into the steps to building a successful farm on leased land. We will explore what farming on leased land is like, hear about this land opportunity, and learn about how the B.C. Land Matching Program can help you find the perfect piece of land for you to build your dream farm business – or the perfect farmer for your land. Vancouver Island Land Matcher, Azja, will how share information and answer questions about land matching and how leasing land works. Both farmers seeking land and farmland owners thinking about leasing land are encouraged to attend – as well as anyone who loves food, farming, and getting out onto the land!

About Manna Farm
Based in the Cowichan Valley, Manna Farm produces a year-round, full diet of local, organic foods. They grow a wide variety of vegetables, fruit, grain, nuts, seeds, poultry, eggs and Bigleaf maple syrup. They focus on nourishing their community through our CSA (Community Shared Agriculture) program, farmers’ markets, and through local grocery stores and cafes.
Elia has been part of the Cowichan Valley farming community for several years working for Makaria Farm from 2012-2015 and Alderlea Farm in 2015. She graduated from UBC with a Bachelor Degree in Plant and Soil Science in May 2015 and embarked on a farming venture of her own in 2016. Elia is passionate about building food security on Vancouver Island by growing, raising and sharing nourishing, organic, sustainable food that has been lovingly and locally produced.
Manna Farm strives to produce a “full diet” of local food, with a wide range of food crops including grains and oilseed crops. Beyond what the farm is producing, they are also looking forward to sharing what leasing this land could look like, and to highlight the potential of everything that can be done here.
Discussion on farming on leased land: Young Agrarians’ Vancouver Island Land Matcher, Azja, will facilitate a discussion on leasing farmland in Cowichan, the South Island, and beyond. Together with Elia, we will explore what the steps are to building a successful business on leased land and how the B.C. Land Matching Program delivered by Young Agrarians can support you in making your farm vision into reality!
