LAND OPPORTUNITY: Up to 3 Acres for Market Garden, Poultry or Bees – Langley, BC

Posted by Ve-Jane Duong on April 22, 2024

We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

Are you a small-scale farmer with plans to grow your business incrementally? Look no further!

Located in the Brookswood neighbourhood south of Langley city, this parcel of cleared land is bordered by local woods on a quiet street off the main road. Flat land, plenty of sun exposure and separate road access to the parcel makes this a great opportunity.

Approximately 1 acre of previously built beds are immediately available. The beds were previously planted in brassicas and are ready to plant again this season with minimal cultivation. A further 2 acres of land can be made available, but is not yet cleared.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

This opportunity would be ideal for mixed vegetable and/or small livestock production such as poultry and bees. Deer and coyotes are in the area, so any crops and livestock would need protection. There is currently no fencing on the property.

The property is on a residential well, so drip irrigation and hoses would be fine but high water pressure sprinkler systems may not be suitable. Implementing a rain catchment system to supplement watering may be advisable. A tiller and mower are available for use with some supervision from the landholders. There is also a 20’x100’ greenhouse tunnel frame that can be used, though the incoming farmer would need to supply the greenhouse poly.

The landholders are looking for help to achieve farm status. For the right candidate, they are open to a term of 2-5 years.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The landholders live on-site and the family has a lot of visitors. It is possible that an incoming farmer will be sharing some space with another farmer. The ideal candidate would be respectful and considerate of both the landholders as well as anybody else who may be sharing the land. As the family home is on well water, an incoming farmer must use water safe practices as the contamination of groundwater is of great concern to the landholders.
