ABOUT THE LAND

The Big Bear Ranch is a family-operated farm located in the foothills of the beautiful Cariboo Mountains with hundreds of lakes and streams in the surrounding area. The ranch encompasses 1800 acres of pasture fields, cultivated farmland, and forested land.

Big Bear Ranch currently raises Galloway cattle, Tamworth/Large English Black pigs, and sheep. They follow the highest welfare standards and sustainable practices (Animal Welfare Approved). No pesticides have been applied since 1995, no commercial fertilizer since 1999, and from 2004 until 2014 Big Bear Ranch was Certified Organic.

A lot of work has been put into building a thriving, highly productive farm which serves a dedicated and passionate customer base with regular deliveries to Prince George, the Okanagan, and Lower Mainland.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The landholder is looking for a farmer or farming family keen to participate in the current food production practices (grass-fed, pasture-raised beef, pork, and lamb) and to introduce new ventures to the ranch such as poultry, heritage grains, or vegetables. Ideally, this farm would be leased to a farmer or farming family who show potential to take on more of the current operations moving forward with a lease to own scenario.

Some of the land has been utilized for poultry in the past and would be well suited for poultry again. Establishing a facility for on-farm slaughter would be ideal (Class D or E).

There is well-established permanent and mobile (electric) fencing for rotational grazing and several fenced enclosures and barns currently in use for pigs, as well as fenced pastures for cattle grazing in and around wooded areas. The operation has good equipment for managing livestock operations, including tractor(s), haying implements, a dump truck, and track loader with over 20 attachments (e.g. post pounder, buckets, tree shear, auger, grapples, pallet forks, forestry mulcher). There are two small and basic cabins on-site for accommodation.

The landholder is looking for a long term arrangement with the possibility for an ownership transition.
