ABOUT THE LAND

Welcome to a little peace of heaven hidden in the trees of Gibsons, BC! This 5 acre ALR property on the Sunshine Coast is tucked between Soames Park and Shirley Macey Park, off of Chamberlin Road in Gibsons. Approximately 2 acres of the property are cleared and filled, and there is potential for 1 more acre to be cleared for agricultural use. The clay-based soil in the cleared area is topped with a foot of good topsoil that has been mixed with compost and forest debris. The area has been cover cropped once, and the landholders continue to build the soil – further soil remediation on the part of the farmer is encouraged. The available farming area is flat and receives full sun in the summer, while outer edges near the tree line are shaded. Water is available from a dugout pond that circles around the property, and the landholders are building a rain catchment system. There is the possibility of digging a well if more water is required.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

This property was acquired by the landholders four years ago, and they have since been developing it into their dream home. Both semi-retired, the landholders are looking to dedicate themselves to the land, including their own gardening, beekeeping, construction projects and textile work (including growing source textile material). They would love to have a farmer on-site who is contributing to and caring for the land, whether independently or collaboratively. This opportunity would work well for ground crops, some greenhouse crops, and potentially small livestock (sheep, goats, chickens, pigs). The landholders are willing to fence portions of the land for pasture. Livestock farmers should be aware of wildlife from the nearby parks.

This opportunity is just 5 minutes from the town of Gibsons, accessible to the Sechelt and Gibsons farmers markets and local grocery stores in addition to receiving ample foot traffic from the neighbouring parks. The landholders are open to having a farm stand by the road or even a commercial space on-site, including the possibility for educational and recreational programming.

The landholders live on-site in their recently built home. Adjacent to their home is a 2-story structure finishing construction that could be made available to the incoming farmer for a variety of purposes (eg housing, wash-pack or processing space, educational space, or commercial space) pending further conversation. Also on the land are several small hoop houses, a shipping container and a small greenhouse. There are plans to build a larger greenhouse in the near future and the possibility of building other structures on the property (eg barn, livestock shelter, additional housing). Each of these structures could be made available to the incoming farmer pending negotiations and discussion. The landholders have construction tools and machinery and are willing to share – though the incoming farmer will need to supply basic farm tools.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

This opportunity is rife with potential, and if the right candidate is ready to put some collaborative work into the land, there is ample possibility for making farm dreams come true. The ideal candidate will be a strong communicator with a clear vision who is deeply dedicated to the land. The landholders are equally happy to have an experienced and independent farmer on the land as they are to cultivate space for a new farm business. They prefer that the incoming farmer use regenerative practices and not use any chemicals. Pets, kids, and visitors are all welcome.
