We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

Are you looking to supplement your fruit production for the season, or ready to take on a new project harvesting and selling fruit? Look no further!

Situated on a 20 acre property in Abbotsford, south of the airport, 0.5 acre organic orchard of pears are available for a seasonal harvesting license. The available orchard includes 22 productive Bartlett and Asian pear trees (0.3 acres), which should generate between 3,000-5,500 lbs of fruit for the season.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The available pear orchard shares the area with approximately 100 non-productive cherry trees on about 1 acre of land, which also includes the main house on the property. The now-retired farming landholder lives in the house and is stepping away from caretaking the farm. Their son, who is helping maintain the land, is looking for someone who is excited about harvesting from the well-loved pear orchard. Harvesting season is between late August and early September.

The remaining majority of the property is leased to another farmer, and the entire property has been listed for sale, including the house and pear orchard. However, for any farmers who are looking for a multi-season harvesting arrangement, there is a chance that the new owners will want to continue a harvesting license with this year’s farmer. Farmers who might be interested in purchasing the property are also welcome to inquire!

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate for this agreement is a farmer who can independently maintain the pear trees for the season and sell their product. The landholders expect that the farmer will maintain the orchard at their own cost, including mowing the grass (equipment will be provided). The farmer will need to obtain Liability insurance, and will harvest the orchard at their own cost. Terms can be negotiated. The landholders are open to a profit-share arrangement, eg. the farmer might keep the first $6,000-7,000 of profits in exchange for labor around the farm beyond the orchard (approx. 200hrs/yr), and then split anything thereafter.  Organic practices are preferred, and the landholders prefer that the orchard be maintained chemical-free.
