Sea Dog Farm in Saanichton, BC is seeking a Farm Helper!

ABOUT Sea Dog Farm

We are a 5-acre farm. We grow and sell fruits, berries, herbs, vegetables, cut flowers, egg and alpaca wool. There are 2 farm stands on the property and we also sell cut flower through 4 local retailers. Additionally, we have a mico cultivation license for recreational cannabis that has been for sale throughout BC.

Most produce is grown in raised beds with drip irrigation. Although we have a tractor, most growing areas are no-till.

The small cannabis side of the farm (1/20 of an acre) is Sun & Earth certified organic and regenerative. The remainder of the farm is not certified however no herbicides, pesticides, or rodenticides are ever used on the farm and we operate regeneratively.

DESIRED QUALITIES

We are looking for someone who likes to learn and work in an ever-changing environment. If you are someone who wants a job doing the same thing all day long, this is not a position for you. The job changes throughout the day and with the seasons.

JOB TASKS

  • Feeding chickens and alpacas
  • Washing eggs
  • Picking and packing produce and flowers
  • Harvesting and trimming cannabis
  • Weeding and mowing
  • Planting and transplanting
  • Making bouquets and wreaths
  • Sifting compost
  • Shovelling and using a wheelbarrow
  • Picking apples, pears and plums
  • Lifting, carrying, climbing

JOB DETAILS

Term: Start date is ASAP and will go until funding and work ends for the year – around mid-December. This has the possibility of becoming a permanent position.

Hours per week: 20 hours per week. This position is for 4 hours a day, Tuesday to Saturday.

Wage: $25 an hour for a “Youth Facing Barriers” as defined by the Federal Government. Our funding level is determined by the youth, not just the farm.

The Federal government defines Youth Facing Barriers* as someone who is 19-30 years old and has one or more of the following “barriers”:

  • 19-30 years old
  • Indigenous
  • Living with a disability: physical
  • Living with a disability: mental health-related or learning disability
  • Racialized youth (formerly visible minority)
  • A recent newcomer to Canada
  • 2SLGBTQI+
  • Living in a low income household
  • Single parent
  • Early school leaver of high school
