LAND OPPORTUNITY: Plots to Lease for Market Gardening – Silver Creek, BC

Posted by Pascale Schittecatte on February 02, 2024

We have more land opportunities than what is listed here! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at land@youngagrarians.org to access our full land inventory and B.C. Land Matching Program support in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

This 54-acre working farm has space to share! The landholders, farmers themselves, are offering 1-5 acres as small plots for aspiring or new market gardeners local to the Silver Creek or Salmon Arm areas.

The soil is highly fertile and has only been used for hay or grazing since 2019, with no chemical applications. Prior to this, the land was in a corn-alfalfa rotation. There is irrigation access from the nearby Salmon River, plentiful compost on-site and the potential for help and support using larger equipment that is part of the main farming operation. The farm is on the main road to Salmon Arm, and is only about a 15-minute drive to town and the lively farmers’ market scene. There is already a farm-stand on-site, and the landholders would be happy to share this space so that new farmers could also sell their produce directly from the farm. There is also interest in setting up communal greenhouses, sheds and other infrastructure.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Crimson Maple Farm (formerly known as Hillside Dreams Goat Dairy) is a regenerative farm raising sheep, goats, laying hens and broilers. They sell lamb, eggs, broiler birds, and compost and are ready to welcome new farmers to share their land.

The landholders envision this space as a communal farming area, where several new farmers can use smaller plots of land, work together and lighten the load! Existing infrastructure, equipment and the farm stand could all be cooperatively managed to make farming just a little bit easier for those starting out.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The offer of turn-key plots with support from an experienced farmer doesn’t come around every day. This property is an excellent opportunity for a new farmer to start their market garden business, with close proximity to sales channels. Candidates should have some experience farming, a sound business plan to share with the landholders and be able demonstrate how they will fit into the existing farm scene. The landholders live on-site and in addition to their farming business, they also have a counselling centre. Farmers will need to work cooperatively with the landholders and other potential farmers to manage the shared space and resources and to respect the other businesses and visitors on-site.

If you’re dreaming of finally starting your farm, don’t delay! This opportunity would be perfect for a Spring 2024 start-date.
