Sept 20, 2025: Cawston, BC – Farm Tour and Potluck at Ntamtqen Community Garden and Food Hub

You are invited to a farm tour at the Smelqmix-led Indigenous food sovereignty project Ntamtqen Community Garden and Food Hub, in Cawston, BC! Young Agrarians is excited to collaborate with Ntamtqen for this tour and to continue to support such an impactful project.

Over the summer, there have been several new projects and expansions to the farm. We would love you to join us to hear about these developments from Dixon Terbasket and Hannah Field at Ntamtqen, share a community potluck meal and celebrate the growth of this incredible Indigenous food sovereignty project and movement. Come check out the new expansions that are underway including a root cellar, outdoor kitchen, workshop, and processing building as well as the flourishing orchards, greenhouse and native plant nursery.

WHEN: September 20, 2025 | 10am-2pm

LOCATION: Syilx Territory. Cawston, BC (15 mins south of Keremeos) | Ntamtqen Community Garden and Food Hub

DIRECTIONS: Unmarked driveway across the road from the Lower Similkameen Indian Band Health, Administration and Community Gym. If coming from Cawston/Keremeos, turn right into the driveway just before the Band Office and school (this turn), then take your first left and follow the driveway to Dixon’s house here. You will be able to see the tall tipi poles from the highway.

SCHEDULE:

10am: Opening Circle
10:30am: Farm Tour
12:00pm: 2pm: Potluck Social

BRING: Please bring a food item to contribute to the potluck –  there will be a list of food items needed and you can sign up to bring one of them. If you can, please include a little card with ingredients for folks with food sensitivities. There will be a grill and stove in the outdoor kitchen if needed. There will also be a refrigerator/freezer for keeping your food items cool.

Please bring a water bottle, camp chair, and any sunscreen, hat and insect repellant you might need, as well as a dish and utensils to use for the potluck and pack home with you. It will likely be very hot out so please dress accordingly. Make sure to farm-suitable clothing and close-toed footwear – the event will proceed rain or shine (though there will be tents available for the potluck in case of rain or to provide shade in the heat).

Ntamtqen Community Garden and Food Hub is Indigenous led on the unceded traditional territory of the Syilx people.

At the heart of Ntamtqen Community Garden the goal is to:
  1. Produce healthy food for the community and grow native plants, building food security and sovereignty
  2. Create business and employment opportunities for our community
  3. Create spaces for education, wellness, collaboration and gathering.

The Ntamtqen Community Garden and Food Hub provides a range of social, economic and health benefits with and for community members centered on Indigenous food security and sovereignty. The food hub farm and garden enables opportunities for passing on traditional knowledge of food gathering and processing through the generations; creates business and employment opportunities for the community; teaches and hosts skill shares and delivers farming/growing education; and hosts gatherings and social events that weaving in arts and culture.

  • Please stay home if you have cold or flu symptoms
  • Please wash your shoes before visiting the farm, especially if you work on or have visited a farm recently
