SEPT 14, 2024: MOOSE JAW, SK – Farm Tour and BBQ Potluck at Wakamow Valley Community Food Farm

You’re invited to a farm tour and BBQ potluck in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan! Join us for an afternoon celebrating summer’s bounty at Wakamow Valley Community Food Farm.

The Wakamow Valley Community Food Farm is a one-acre garden and orchard that hosts farm tours and educational workshops to help strengthen local food systems and gardening knowledge.

Come for the tour, stay for new community connections, storytelling, and the BBQ potluck. We’ll also learn about the YA Apprenticeship Program and hear from Danilo, a participant in the program.

WHEN: Saturday, September 14, 2024 | 12-4pm

LOCATION: Treaty 4 Territory. Mosaic Community Food Farm and Orchard | Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

DIRECTIONS: Take Highway 2 (snowbirds expressway) south. This is a one-way street. Just before exiting town turn right onto Grandview Street West and then an immediate left onto Wellesley Street (street name on sign post looks more like Ellesle). This road will take you down the hill and underneath the bridge. Continue straight underneath the bridge until you reach Winston Street. Finding the Entrance: Here you can either take a left onto Winston Street which will lead you on a wrap-around through Bank Street to the entrance, or you can continue straight ahead until you see another left-hand turn into a wooded path just before the Mosaic Food Farm sign. Parking: Winston Street or Wellesley Street.

REGISTER: This event is free, but please register on Eventbrite as space is limited.

12:00pm – 1:00pm Welcome and BBQ Potluck
1:00pm – 2:30pm Garden and Orchard Tour
2:30pm – 3:00pm Learn about the Young Agrarians Apprenticeship Program
3:00pm – 4:00pm Social
4:00pm Depart

BRING: There will be hot dogs provided (we have enough for 50 people). Side dishes are welcomed! Please include a little card with ingredients if you can for folks with food sensitivities. Please also bring plates/cutlery/cups and a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. Dress for the weather.

About Wakamow Valley Community Food Farm

The Wakamow Valley Community Food Farm is a one-acre garden and orchard built from the philosophy that healthy food grown with love can change lives. The farm is located in the beautiful Wakamow Valley and is a collaborative effort between local nonprofits and community minded funders. The produce grown at the farm is distributed to five partner organizations (Moose Jaw and District Food Bank, Riverside Mission, Hunger in Moose Jaw, Moose Jaw Transition House and Moose Jaw Multicultural Council). Currently, these partners have limited access or funds available to provide recipients with fresh produce.

The Wakamow Valley Community Food Farm is urban, open to the public and focuses on food security. The farm is supported by volunteers and engages with various community groups by hosting farm tours and educational workshops to help strengthen local food systems and gardening knowledge. The farm is also a model for small-scale agriculture. Systems are based on a “human-scale” and the farm uses planting methods that are best suited to the location, end purpose and needs of our partner organizations.
