Join the Ancestral Foodways Collective Society and Young Agrarians at Strathcona Park to participate in tanning bison hides, share a potluck meal that will nourish your spirit and body, and help tend to the foodlands, a biocultural corridor that is rooted in Coast Salish food forest systems and chinampa-milpa foodscapes.⁠

With the recent launch of our National New Farmer Framework report, we are sharing farmer stories that highlight the need for policy change!⁠

🌾 Katie’s Story📍 The Dogs Run Farm near Clearwater, Manitoba⁠
⁠
"My name is Katie McInnes, a first generation farmer raising cattle, pigs, sheep, chickens and turkeys on pasture. Our farm uses ecological and regenerative farming practices to raise our food and direct markets to our customers across Manitoba. We work with a small team of other first generation farmers who we have trained through the Young Agrarian Apprenticeship Program.⁠
⁠
In the past, we have accessed funding from Youth Employment Services Canada to hire our apprentices. Recent changes to their program now restrict funding to the hiring of new workers only, with no support for rehiring the staff we have worked hard to mentor, motivate and support. This shift has created a significant gap in retention funding for on-farm internships. Regenerative and agroecological farming requires extensive training and mentorship. We want to be able to offer continued employment to our incredible farm workers—especially since meaningful agricultural training takes more than one season to complete.⁠
⁠
We need more recruitment, training and retention programs which include comprehensive agricultural labour wage subsidies that understand the needs of farms like ours!"⁠

Experience the growing world of Dunrea Farming Company, an ecological farm led by Kara Burrell with support from her partner Brian Meaud. This family-run operation grows vegetables and garlic, and will soon be opening an on-farm bed and breakfast. With their two children, Kara and Brian are reimagining what rural living and regenerative farming means to them.⁠

On this tour, we’ll walk through their evolving three-acre market garden filled with perennials and annual vegetables. Learn how they’re cultivating abundance using organic farming practices, permanent raised beds, composting, cover cropping and preserving wild land around the farm.⁠

You’ll also get a first look at their newly built farm store and bed and breakfast accommodation, a beautiful addition to their agri-tourism vision. We’ll finish the day with a community potluck and pizza night!⁠
