The grasslands are waking up after a long, cold winter slumber and soon enough, the prairie crocuses will start to bloom. A classic sign of spring on the prairies. Did you know that the ground where this native flowering plant springs from stores tons of carbon? ⁠

In an article by CBC’s What on Earth, Saskatchewan-based author, Candace Savage and multidisciplinary artist, Kevin Wesaquate, explore the overlooked beauty of the prairies and the resilience embedded in native grasses’ deep roots. ⁠

Native grasslands are among the world's most endangered ecosystems and in North America, more than one million hectares are destroyed each year for cropland and urban areas. Read about the movement to protect and preserve what's left of this once-vast habitat in Canada, and how groups like Parks Canada, ranchers, and First Nations are collaboratively integrating practices like controlled burns, restoring bison herds, and grazing livestock to keep the grassland ecosystem in balance. ⁠

"All Indigenous peoples and Nations were food sovereign at the time of colonization and for many generations after. In some places, Indigenous peoples flourished when they combined their cultural and agricultural practices with tools and ideas from Europe and elsewhere. Nations produced a surplus of food, often preserving and trading these surpluses with surrounding Nations that produced complementary products.⁠
⁠
According to oral histories, during the Great Depression, many First Nations and Indigenous peoples didn’t realize there was a depression because they were food sovereign. Nations not only were food sovereign but also had regular surpluses that were provided to guests through feast systems and also traded with neighbours.⁠
⁠
Despite major shocks to Indigenous peoples, many Nations maintained food sovereignty well into the 1900s. Catastrophic population declines began in now-BC in the 1700s, as European diseases caused a “holocaust” and Nations lost over 90% of their populations over the first century of European contact. This loss, coupled with oppressive and genocidal colonization, is what led to the loss of agricultural knowledge and practices. It was not, as presented in our history books, a case of Indigenous people not being agrarian. It was instead a case of people experiencing catastrophic loss after catastrophic loss and then being blamed for their losses and framed as primitive hunter-gatherers."⁠

Meet Victoria Radauskas! Victoria runs her farm Between Two Farms / Six Ewes Yarn through a land-sharing arrangement with her mentor, Joey Fiola of Fiola Farms. Raising sheep for meat and fibre, as well as meat chickens, Victoria is launching the production side of her business this year. ⁠

How did she learn how to farm? ⁠
⁠
"The Young Agrarians Apprenticeship Program was my first step in learning how to farm. This program immersed me in regenerative farming practices and connected me with a network of sheep, textile, and mixed livestock producers, many of which who are still involved in my life and my farming journey. My apprenticeship was with The Dog’s Run Farm (Clearwater, MB), and they taught me the basics of raising sheep, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and laying hens, as well as regenerative practices such as rotational and planned grazing, low and no till gardening, and direct to consumer sales."⁠
