August 24: The Pig Out at Edible Acres!

Posted by Laura Hannant on August 04, 2014

What: The Pig Out is how the folks at Edible Acres in Winderberry offer up a taste of their farm and the Columbia Valley.  It’s a taste adventure that you don’t want to miss out on… chefs from the region serve up a bounty of local foods, beer and wine are on hand for thirst quenching, local bands play, and it all happens in the gorgeous outdoors – so you can wander through fields of veggies and flowers as you eat!

Bonus, Young Agrarians will be set up with a booth.  Drop by for a chat.

Why: The Pig Out is an amazing way to celebrate Kootenay food culture – more than 200 people gather to enjoy local food.  It is also a farm-fundraiser and a great way to show support for the rad young farmers of Edible Acres and the Columbia Valley convivium of Slow Food.  Plus, for all you farmers and wannabe farmers, this is a perfect chance to steal with your eyes – tour the farm and see how they are growing glorious organic produce for their community.

When: Sunday, August 24, 2:00-5:00pm

Where: Edible Acres, 1681 Highway 93/95, Windermere, Kootenays, BC

Edible Acres is a community supported agriculture farm in its second year of transition to organic certification.  Lin and Oliver Egan grow fifty-five varieties of fruits and vegetables on two acres.  What they produce feeds their CSA membership, including 5 members a year who work for their shares.

Lin and Oliver are also passionate advocates for healthy local food systems.  Oliver was one of two young Kootenay farmers who traveled to the Legislature in Victoria this spring to protest Bill 24 and defend “Zone 2” foodlands.

This is the third time that Lin and Oliver are hosting The Pig Out.  The event embodies their dynamic, joyful approach to farming.  Young Agrarians is delighted to be taking part.  We hope we’ll see you there!
