Repost from @portisheadallotment:"Celebrating Oc Repost from @portisheadallotment:"Celebrating Oca! Sometimes known as the New Zealand Yam.These small tuber grow very similar to potatoes but have a citrusy fresh taste to them when roasted. I’m a big fan of growing things that are hard to find in shops, and these little beauties fall into that category. They take a lot longer than potatoes, with the harvest being before the first frost, but look beautiful as a plant on the plot.I planted three tubers into an upturned bucket with the bottom cut out, and they produced all of these in a very difficult growing year. Oca does come in different colours too, and you can save tubers every year to replant. Worth the investment in my eyes, and the leaves are edible too and great on the top of salads. Really do recommend if you’re looking for something different next year. "Has anyone else tried to grow oca? Any tips or tricks? Don't miss this recent piece from Civil Eats on ho Don't miss this recent piece from Civil Eats on how native seeds are being used to heal climate-scarred land in California. ⬇️

"Government agencies, tribes, and other land managers use the seeds to revegetate fire-ravaged areas, transform abandoned farmland, reestablish wetlands, and repair other damaged or altered lands, creating environments that support local ecosystems and biodiversity.

Research has shown that native plants play a powerful role in slowing climate change and restoring ecosystems. They create wildlife habitat, sequester carbon, limit dust and erosion by stabilizing soil, and deter future wildfires by preventing highly flammable invasive grasses from taking root."

Last month, we welcomed our 2025 Alberta apprentic Last month, we welcomed our 2025 Alberta apprentices to their orientation weekend at Davey Creek Ranch near Innisfail, Alberta! They spent the weekend learning to build fences and enjoying meals that featured beef from the farm (if you've never tried beef tongue tacos, you're missing out!). These incredible young farmers are the heart of Young Agrarians, and it was wonderful to hear their stories and learn about their passion for growing food. 👩🏽‍🌾

Thank you to Central Alberta Co-op for their food donation to our apprentices' orientation! 💚
