The BC Provincial Election is coming up on Saturda The BC Provincial Election is coming up on Saturday, October 19, 2024! We want to encourage all of those in our BC network to make your voice heard by getting out to vote in your riding (or by mailing in your ballot!)⁠ ⁠ This election is an opportunity to promote policies that support the health of people and communities, our food systems, and the ecologies that we rely upon. Some issues that are at the top of mind for us in regards to food and farming are:⁠ ⁠ • Indigenous food sovereignty⁠ • Food insecurity and affordable living⁠ • Climate action⁠ • Supporting biodiversity and the ecosystems that help feed us⁠ • Programs to support new farmers⁠ • Water licensing⁠ ⁠ Advance voting will be available October 10 – 13 and October 15 – 16. We're excited to welcome Tessa Thompson (previousl We're excited to welcome Tessa Thompson (previously the Okanagan-Thompson Land Matcher) back to the Young Agrarians (YA) team as our new B.C. Apprenticeship Coordinator!⁠ ⁠ Tessa Thompson lives in Vernon, BC with her husband and daughter and is returning to YA after a joyful year and a half maternity leave. Her background is primarily in vegetable production, which she pursued on farm start-ups on leased land in the city and then in her homeplace, the Okanagan Valley, for 10 years. In 2018, Tessa took a place on the BCLMP team, where she fell in love with the art of mediation and facilitation. She loves food and purchasing fresh farm goods from a number of farmers whom she supported through the BCLMP at the local market is a great pleasure. She recently formed a co-ownership purchase agreement with her family on 5 acres and now has a lifetime of work cut out for her with boulder fields, bindweed patches and renovations. ⁠We're thrilled to have Tessa join our Apprenticeship Program team! ⁠ The Young Agrarians Apprenticeship Program offers advanced, hands-on apprenticeships in regenerative agriculture. Apprentices have gone on to work on other farms, begin their own farming enterprise, and partner with elder agrarians wanting to transition their farms.⁠ ⁠ Host farm applications are open for the Young Agrarians Apprenticeship Program. Jo is a Regenerative Soils & Living Compost Specialist, and founder of Rootshoot Soils. She works with farmers to teach practical strategies to leverage biodiverse compost to restore soil life.
