ABOUT THE FARMER

You might recognize Farmer Abdul from numerous Metro Vancouver based Farmers Markets. Abdul is such a passionate and dedicated farmer, with an amazing story. Abdul has a strong connection to the land, and to his crops. He’s the owner and operator of BC Garlic, a wonderful family owned business with fantastic product. The product is sold at farmers markets and local retailers in the Lower Mainland. Abdul also does some wholesaling of seed garlic, and is certified organic.

In Abdul’s words:

“My earliest memories of food are as a five-year-old first tasting my mother’s hot garlic chutney. Its unbeatable taste and smell was like a food epiphany and was my first realization that food can be utterly enticing.

Soon after we immigrated to Canada, I planted my own garlic at a community allotment garden and when I shared my small harvest with friends and family, I knew this was a plant that I wanted to keep growing.

The more garlic I grew, the more the beautiful hardy plant grew on me with its pungent taste, mysterious health benefits and range of different cultivars. I read garlic books and studies with no inkling about what this would all mean to me 15 years later.”

… and the rest they say, is history.

LAND REQUIREMENTS

Abdul is looking for land within a reasonable driving distance from Burnaby, to accommodate his steadily growing business. He has found over the past season that he’s outgrown his current acreage. BC Garlic is looking for a long-term lease (minimum 5 years), and needs at least 8-10 acres. Abdul grows ecologically without the use of any artificial chemicals or fertilizers. Ideally, this property would have an outbuilding such as an insulated barn that he’d be able to dry his crop in after harvest. The property must have access to water and electricity.
