The weather was fabulous for our WoodGrain Farmer Co-op Land Social this past Sunday July 11! Nestled in the Kispiox Valley north of Hazelton BC on Gitxsan Territory, 44 attendees and 5 hosts, from as far west as Prince Rupert and as far east as Vanderhoof, gathered to learn about the B.C. Land Matching Program (BCLMP), tour the beautiful WoodGrain farm, and gather in each other’s company – sharing stories, meeting everyone, and enjoying a delicious line up of homemade, home-grown, and ethically-sourced foods!
Starting with an introduction circle, we spent time getting to know everyone, where they are from, and how they are involved in agriculture to set the tone for an excellent evening. Everyone was excited to be there, see old friends, meet new ones and learn something new!
Jolene, Land Matcher and farmer at Woodgrain, then shared about the programs Young Agrarians offers and how to get involved in the B.C. Land Matching Program, whether you are a landholder with land available, a farmer looking for land, or somewhere in between!
Next was the farm tour. Meira and Willow, lead market gardeners of the WoodGrain Farmer Co-op, opened their doors to their organic, full-circle, small-scale vegetable gardens and greenhouses. They supply vegetables for two local markets and a 40+ member CSA.
Along with their vegetable production, we got to check out Jolene’s vegetable seed production and Jonathan’s grain growing, milling and woodfired baking.
To wrap up the evening, everyone gathered to enjoy some amazing food! A huge thank you to those who brought food for the event. Dai Fukasaku from Prince Rupert, chef and supporter of fishers and farmers in the region, shared a variety of exceptional seafood for the event, and Jacob and Jessica Beaton of Tea Creek Farm shared a huge spring salmon fresh from the Skeena – so much gratitude to Dai and the Beatons for these wonderful gifts from the river and the sea. We’re planning an invite only event with Tea Creek Farm in August, details to come!
Along with the seafood spread was pretzels and baguettes from the woodfired oven (with wheat grown and milled on site), vegetables from the farm, and an assortment of dips/spreads to enjoy.
There was so much love and laughter shared this evening. It was great to get out, tour a beautiful farm, meet everyone and reset as we head into the second half of the year!
The event was also the perfect way to introduce Morgan Kitchen, our new Central-North Land Matcher, who is stepping into the role as Jolene transitions to focus on her land-based projects. Morgan is so excited to be a part of the process in helping farmers and landholders grow their vision.
