ABOUT THE LAND
Two farm fields are available for lease on Salt Spring Island, BC. Available separately or together, starting spring 2019. Both fields are fenced with standard deer fencing. Located on 25 wooded acres, 15 minutes outside of Ganges.
Field 1 is approximately 0.2 acre in size and has sandy soil, good drainage and low fertility. Field 1 includes a high-tunnel on permanent foundation and cannot be moved. High tunnel dimensions are 49’ x 24’. Water from a well and pond is available for irrigation in this field.
Field 2 is approximately 0.26 acre in size and is a drained swamp land. It has fine soil with good moisture holding capacity. It is very wet/flooded in winter, and slow to warm up/dry in spring. Would be good for root crop production as soil is fine and quite free of debris. No water is available for irrigation in this field. Irrigation has not been required in the past due to the amount of moisture held in soil.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
These fields are available for a one-year trial lease, after which the lease may be extended for an additional 3 years or potentially longer. A small amount of shared storage and processing space can be made available. I may be able to provide some tractor work if desired (to be discussed). Organic production only (non-certified).
The ideal candidate will have some experience with organic farming, and be able to provide a basic business plan of how they intend their endeavour to be financially viable.
