LAND OPPORTUNITY: A Quarter-Acre Orchard, with Berries and more! – Delta, BC

Posted by Danika Watson on September 24, 2024

We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

A mini-orchard and raised beds are available on this beautiful 9.5-acre property in Delta, BC. The property is currently home to horses and a variety of fruit trees and berry bushes in three parcels, totalling 0.25 acres. Previously, the land housed a variety of livestock. Many of the trees and bushes are mature, and they include asian pears, plums, kiwis, figs, pawpaw, saskatoon berries, blueberries, raspberries and black currants!

In addition to the fruit trees and berry bushes, there are two raised beds and a small greenhouse on-site. The property is partially fenced, and the soil varies from good topsoil to clay in some areas. Water to the parcel is supplied by the city.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The landholder is looking for an incoming farmer to reinvigorate the existing fruit trees and berry bushes and increase their production. Beyond this, the two small raised plots could be used for herbs, vegetables, or flowers, and there is some space that may be available for limited expansion. The property has a 10-by-20-foot glass house on the property, and some greenhouse space may be available to the farmer, along with storage space for tools. Ladders, hand tools and some power tools may also be available for use. Though organic practices have previously been used on the property, the landholder is open to other farming practices.

Finding someone to maintain the fruit trees and keeping the property’s farm status are the landholder’s main goals, and they would be open to a crop share arrangement. On-site sales will not be possible on the property, except to some pre-existing customers. The landholder looks forward to learning from the farmer and seeing production expand on the property!

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The incoming farmer will be working in proximity to the landholder and other folks residing on the property (family and staff members), so good communication and a positive relationship will be key. On-site housing is not available, so the ideal candidate would be able to commute to the property. Parking is available and the property is on a bus route with stops just outside the farm.

The ideal candidate would be a farmer who has ample experience with fruit trees but would like to start small. This is a great opportunity for a farmer who could utilize fruit for value-added products and bring new life to an existing orchard!
