LAND OPPORTUNITY: Orchard & homestead above Arrow Lake

Posted by Hailey Troock on February 22, 2023

We have more land opportunities than what is listed here! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at land@youngagrarians.org to access our full land inventory and B.C. Land Matching Program support in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

The land is located above Arrow Lake, near the community of Castlegar. The land is accessed by Forest Service Road about 40 minutes from town. Due to its location near the lake, the property has a warmer micro-climate than the surrounding areas.

The property is off-grid and has power from two water wheels on the property. There is no cell service available in the area but there is phone and wifi.

The remote land comprises 13 acres with about 1 acre of vegetable gardens, and mixed fruit and nut tree orchard. The remaining acreage is in forest.

The land currently produces most of the fruit and nut varieties that our climate allows, including apple (which includes over 25 different varieties), pears, plums, pluots, peaches, apricots, cherries, figs, grapes, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, haskaps, almonds, filberts, walnuts, and others.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The landholders grow many varieties of vegetables, seeds, and grains and save many of their own vegetable seeds. They have devised ways to process seeds, grains and nuts using devices of their own making. They continue to experiment with ways to make things better and/or more convenient on the farm.

The landholders would like to find a person or couple who would enjoy living off the land on the homestead and would like to learn from the landholders’ experiences in running this type of operation.

The idea would be that the incoming farmers would gradually take on more and more of the work. Although they sell their surplus fruit, and make a small income from it, it is quite possible for someone to make a living income from the land, if so inclined.

There is no housing available on the land but interested farmers can bring their own accommodation in the form of tiny house, RV or trailer.
