LAND OPPORTUNITY: 1/2 acre for Vegetable or Flower Production – Penticton, BC

Posted by Haley Schonhofer on July 23, 2024

We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

Centrally located in Penticton just behind Munson Mountain, this half acre parcel is now available for lease! The current landholders have loved and used this land for small-scale vegetable and fruit production for years, successfully growing everything from garlic, beans and corn to strawberries and raspberries.

Located in the Agricultural Land Reserve, the property includes an agricultural water use license and irrigation already fitted throughout the parcel. Some minor changes would be needed to suit an incoming farmer’s specific project. The farming area will need cultivation and added topsoil, but the ground underneath is productive sandy loam with very little presence of rocks – excellent for growing produce!

The property is fully enclosed with deer fencing and includes a mix of pre-existing garden beds and open spaces. Some of the open spaces contain septic structures, so these areas would not be suitable for deep-rooted plants. There is a small parking area and separate gate for access to the farming space. The landholders are open to the farmer backfilling the parking area to create additional growing space. There is also a greenhouse on-site that could potentially be used by the farmer or shared with the landholders!

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The landholders live on the property and would love to see the land used for vegetable or flower production. They are flexible and open to discussing how best to use and arrange the space.

The property is on a corner lot surrounded by non-organic vineyards – due to low levels of drift from the neighbouring properties, organic certification would unfortunately be challenging. However, the landholders have not seen any effects on their crops over the last seven years, and have only treated their own property with organic fertilizers. There is also a chicken coop on-site, which means ample access to chicken waste for amendments!

The central location in Penticton means easy access and close proximity to resources, markets and customers! The landholders also have connections with local restaurants (to whom they previously sold produce) and would be happy to make introductions for the right candidate.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

Compatibility is key for this opportunity, as the candidate will be working in close proximity to the landholders’ home, and the landholders will need to maintain access to their chicken coop through the farming area. On-site housing is not a possibility, so the ideal candidate will be someone who lives in or near the City of Penticton and is looking for space to share! This opportunity would work well as a starter space for a new farmer or as an add-on plot for an existing market garden operation.

The property cannot accommodate dogs or small children, due to a dog on-site. However, there will be fencing separating the landholders’ residence and dog from the farming space.

The landholders are very excited to share the space and welcome someone onto the property to start or expand a vegetable or flower business!
