ABOUT THE LAND
Tucked in a beautiful valley backing onto Mt Richards in the Westholme area of North Cowichan, this 40 acre property is half forested, half ponds and open growing space. Many perennial fruit trees and bushes have been planted and propagated by the landowner, and there are acres of open space for food production remaining. The growing space has irrigation systems set up which are fed by the two large ponds (also great for swimming!).
The land use plan is inspired by permaculture principles and Joel Salatin’s methods. The land slopes slightly to the west, with the ponds at the top, followed by orchard space and some raised beds, and to the east approximately two acres of open field space is available for use for annual vegetable production (or other ideas?) this season. Deer fencing is in place around the perimeter of the growing space, as well as some electric fencing for bears. Lots of wildlife frequent the area, so an appreciation for the natural world is important!
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The landowner would like the right person or people to join him in creating the vision of a mixed farm – with fruit, vegetables and livestock. Infrastructure is being developed, and he would love to invite others to the land to together make use of the huge growing capacity of the space! The landowner has a tractor for cultivation, mowing, bed shaping as well as some basic soil inputs already on site available for use.
There is potential to live on site, though the set up this year is basic. The ponds are available for swimming and irrigation, but drinking water is brought in from town (only 15 minutes away). Septic is being put in this year, so RVs would be taken off property to pump.
What is your farm vision? Come with energy and enthusiasm and your own farm plan, or ready to support growing as much food as possible!
