LAND OPPORTUNITY: 160 acres with housing for an organic dairy operation – Fort St. John, BC

We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

Looking for pastureland for a dairy operation? This property near Fort St. John offers 100 acres of flat, fenced land and 60 acres of sloping, treed land. The property is centrally located, just five to seven minutes from town.

In the past, the land was used for dairy, then beef, and in recent years has been used as rotational pasture for cattle. The property also features a newer multi-use building that has a large shop and six-bedroom living quarters above, which would available to the incoming farmers.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Along with fenced pastureland and family-sized housing, this opportunity includes potential mentorship and knowledge sharing! The landholders have a background in dairy and beef but are not currently farming, and would be happy to lend an extra set of hands. They have the skills to support the endeavor and help the incoming farmers contribute to sustainable local food production. Dairy is daily – and the landholders are willing to provide some help in sharing that workload.

While the landholders would strongly prefer dairy as the main enterprise, they are open to diverse livestock, vegetables, and other types of food production as well.

The location and established infrastructure position this property well with regards to sales channels. A storefront would be encouraged, potentially with a fill-up station, and there is an existing butcher shop and storefront on the neighbouring property that could potentially stock dairy and other products. Proximity to town would also allow incoming farmers to sell at the farmers market all summer.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal farmers for this opportunity may be a young couple or family who value local food sustainability and organic production practices. Farmers who value knowledge sharing and would like a supportive and collaborative relationship with the landholders would be a particularly good fit.

The landholders would love to connect with farmers with a young, entrepreneurial energy. Families with kids are more than welcome, and the ideal candidates would ideally plan to stay long-term and build a productive organic dairy and/or mixed operation.
