LAND OPPORTUNITY: Diversified Farm with Community of Customers – Roblin, MB

ABOUT THE LAND & OPPORTUNITY

The current farm was established in 2007 near San Clara, MB and has grown over the years. It is a quarter section of mixed pasture and bushland. We have been downsizing farm operations in 2020 in anticipation of a move to a new farm in BC.

The farm is fenced and cross fenced for cattle with 2 heated waterers, corrals, handling chute/squeeze and barn. Many paddocks for ease of moving and sorting cattle plus separated winter feeding groups. Hay has been purchased locally rather than produced on the land. Cattle have been a part of this farm since 2008. We sell dexter beef by direct marketing to our customer list.

There are two 2-3 acre partially wooded pastures setup up for pigs. Sows farrowed in the barn in cold months and outdoors in small shelters in warmer months. Pigs have been raised on this farm since 2014.

We sell our naturally-raised pork by direct marketing to our customer list. We have raised pastured chickens here for ten years with numbers up to 999 in the past 5 years. These birds are started as day old chicks in the barn and then moved to pasture when fully feathered where they were moved daily to clean them in clean conditions, with fresh grass and to spread their droppings across the field.

There is a great demand for our chickens and we easily sell out every year. Laying hens were added to the farm at a market-scale in 2017. Hens were moved about the fields in “Eggmobiles” and this produced fantastic quality of eggs.

From 2008-2019 we produced mostly garlic (30,000+ bulbs) which was sold across the country as seed bulbs and more locally as table garlic. Currently there are 320 (approx) cloves planted for the 2021 season – these represent 24 different varieties and will be part of the farm sale.

Vegetables have been a solid part of the farm from the beginning. We use organic practices but are not certified. There are currently about 1.5 acres in use. Raised beds have been sculpted with a tractor implement. We grown the full range of standard vegetables with emphasis on carrots and cabbage. Established asparagus patch. Unheated greenhouse is 10x20ft. Small fruits include sour cherries, blackcurrant, haskap, raspberries, saskatoons.
