LAND OPPORTUNITY: 4 acres of mature vines – Kaleden, BC

Posted by Pascale Schittecatte on July 16, 2024

We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

This charming four-acre vineyard in Kaleden, BC is available for lease! The mature Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer vines, planted in 2008, have a strong production history. The current landholders have cropped them continuously to about six tonnes per acre. Located on Highway 97,  the vineyard is easily accessible and is well-connected with surrounding wineries and markets.

The vineyard is gently sloped and is equipped with a full irrigation system, including both overhead and drip lines. Many of the vines survived the cold snap of last season, and long-term production capacity is optimistic. The vineyard has historically been farmed using conventional methods, but the current landholders have maintained a strong appreciation for limited and well-timed sprays to protect the land and pollinators.

The vineyard is fully fenced and well-maintained. There is a single-family home on site as well as garage space for equipment and tools.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The current landholders are looking to move and leave the vineyard in capable, trusted hands. They are very interested in a lease-to-own arrangement, as they want to pass on the vineyard to someone who will manage and care for the land and vines long-term, continuing their legacy.

The landholders would be happy to discuss the sale of equipment available at the property, including a well-maintained Kabota tractor. There is ample garage space for storing the tractor and any other necessary tools. Once the landholders have left the property, their house may also be available to rent!

The vineyard is well-connected to surrounding wineries, and there is good potential for the new farmer to renew or continue previous sales contracts, if not wishing to use the grapes themselves. The vineyard is situated in the heart of wine country in the Okanagan Valley, which also means good access to markets and customers.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The current landholders have put many years of love and care into the vines and the land, and are hoping for a like-minded farmer who is ready to care for the vineyard with the same level of respect. The landholders would be happy to share their wealth of knowledge about the land, vines and surrounding markets with the ideal candidate.

Farmers with several years of experience as a vineyard manager or owner/operator of their own vineyard would be excellent candidates for this opportunity. This is the perfect parcel to function as an add-on to an existing operation, or as a start-up opportunity for a viticulturist looking to branch out on their own. Lease-to-own, mature vineyards with housing are not often available in the south Okanagan – don’t miss out on this rare opportunity!
