LAND OPPORTUNITY: 3 acres of mature Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Gewurztraminer vines – Kaleden, BC

Posted by Haley Schonhofer on August 28, 2024

We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

This gem of a property is a rare opportunity in the Okanagan: a fully established and mature three-acre vineyard!

Located in Kaleden, just outside of Penticton, this property is positioned right in the heart of Okanagan wine country. With established connections to customers and close proximity to markets, this is a great opportunity to start a new vineyard business or pick up where the landholders left off.

This Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Gewürztraminer vineyard has been planted and in production for almost 15 years, with a production history of seven to eight tonnes. Although there is a minimal crop this season due to last winter’s cold snap, the majority of the vines have survived and future production potential is very optimistic. There is a nursery area to care for new young vines, to replace any vines that are not producing, but very few vines have required replacement recently. The vineyard is currently managed by a maintenance company but will be available for the next growing season.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The landholder is looking for someone committed to managing the vineyard for an initial three to five-year lease (to ensure that the fit is right), with the opportunity to extend. A key point to note is that the vines are planted in five-foot wide rows, so equipment must be able to accommodate that spacing. There is a large shed available for storing tools and equipment.

The landholder is currently in the process of upgrading and expanding the drip-line irrigation system for the entire vineyard, and the whole property is deer-fenced.

Along with the vineyard, there is also space for vegetables, berries and chickens! Garden boxes would be available to the incoming farmer, as would the blueberry and raspberry bushes on the property. A chicken coop and chick nursery area are available as well, if the farmer would like to make use of them.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The landholder is keen on passing along the management of the vineyard to an experienced viticulturist who is committed to maintaining the health and productivity of the vines. Since the landholder lives on-site and operates another public-facing business on the property, neatness and attention to aesthetic are important. The ideal candidate would also have access to their own equipment.

There are two homes on the property that are currently rented, so there is no opportunity for housing at this time. However, the homes may become vacant and available for rent in the future.

Opportunities like this don’t come along too often, so don’t wait to reach out if you are an experienced grape-grower and would like the chance to start or expand your operation!
