ABOUT THE LAND
Located in Kitwanga, BC, within the territory of the Gitxsan Nation, 3.25 acres of land are available for turn-key vegetable production at Tea Creek. Recently featured in a CBC documentary, Tea Creek is an award-winning, Indigenous-led, culturally safe, land-based Indigenous food sovereignty and trades training initiative. The landholders, who are experienced farmers, would love to see the property continue in operation while they focus on their training initiative for the next few years.
This beautiful 160-acre property offers bountiful mixed forest and cultivated fields with multiple water systems nearby, including lakes with excellent fishing and recreation. The land features loam soils on gently sloping grades. The farm has previously produced over 20,000 lbs of food annually and has all the equipment and infrastructure necessary to continue running the same numbers, and more!
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
This is an excellent opportunity to start or expand an operation on an established farm! There is plenty of equipment available on-site, including tractors, bed makers, planters and cultivators. The incoming farmer would also have access to infrastructure such as barns, sheds and cold storage. This opportunity is open to many types of production, including various crops, but the land, infrastructure and equipment available are best suited to vegetable production.
Given that the landholders will continue to farm and teach Indigenous food sovereignty on the land, good, open and clear communication from the heart will be key. The landholders are willing to mentor and share their experience with vegetable farming, and they are also looking to pass on their established customer base to the incoming farmer. They would love for the farmer to collaborate on facilitating their training programs, such as Indigenous-led Foodlands Employment Apprenticeship Skills Training (I-FEAST) (this would be additional, paid work).
ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate would be an experienced farmer who is interested in commercial agricultural production (not homesteading), in order to make the best use of this opportunity.
If not Indigenous, incoming farmer must be culturally-aware and educated on the history of colonization and the ongoing challenges that Indigenous communities face as a result of colonization. Candidates must have completed kinSHIFT’s Elements of Truth reconciliation training.
This is an excellent, flexible opportunity for a farmer seeking access to a turn-key operation for vegetables, with paid, collaborative work opportunities with I-FEAST from Tea Creek!
