LAND OPPORTUNITY: 2.5 acres for flowers, bees, and more – Coldstream, BC

Posted by Pascale Schittecatte on May 10, 2024

We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

This charming property has 2.5 acres of space ready for small-scale agriculture! Located on a quiet road outside of Coldstream, BC, the farming area is divided between three sloped pastures with driveway access through the pastures all the way to the top.

The uppermost pasture is rocky and would be best suited for bees, a greenhouse or as a storage and work space. The middle pasture is the best option for market gardening – there is ample space, good soil and with a bit of levelling it would make a suitable area to work in. The lowest space is a smaller pasture that might suit floriculture or another crop that doesn’t take up much space. Finally, closest to the road, there is an old barn which has a lower-level space that is available to a potential farmer. There are power and water hookups in the space, which would just need a gentle refurbishment.

There is cow-fencing all around the property and between the pastures. A bit of repair would be needed in order to render the fences sturdy and to keep the local deer population out! The landholders are also refurbishing a suite that is attached to the main house, which may be available to a farmer to lease – this space would be suitable for a single person or couple only.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The current landholders love this property’s rural location and agricultural charm and would be happy to share the space with a like-minded farmer. They are hoping that a new farmer can use the space productively and help keep the property part of the vibrant local agricultural scene.

There is a strong preference for ecological or regenerative farming to help restore health and vitality to the property. The property would likely best suit bees, flowers or a market garden, and the landholders would be happy with a couple of sheep or goats to complement to the other farming.

With indoor workshop space and the potential for housing on-site, this is a wonderful opportunity to launch a small-scale farm on an all-in-one property. The landholders are also planning on using other spaces on the property for themselves and for creative and artistic retreats.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

This property would best suit a candidate that is looking to work on a small-scale, mixed-use farming project. The ideal candidate should have a strong track record of managing farming operations, with the know-how to build something from the ground up. They should feel confident carrying out both farming and infrastructure projects in order to transform this property into their dream farm!

As the landholders live on-site and have additional plans for the property, the ideal candidate should have strong communication skills and enjoy working cooperatively with others.
