LAND OPPORTUNITY: 10-acre mixed orchard ready to share with a poultry farmer – Lake Country, BC

We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

Centrally located in Lake Country, this established 10-acre orchard has space to share with a poultry farmer for egg production! The orchard contains a mix of cherry, apple, peach, plum, and apricot trees alongside some table grape vines. Garlic, potatoes, and asparagus are also grown between the young tree orchard rows.

There is an established market on-site where customers can purchase produce directly from the orchard and from other local producers. The property is also home to a popular U-Pick program throughout the growing season. Apples from the orchard are processed on-site into juice and cider.

The farm is not certified organic but does draw on regenerative practices, including cover cropping and rotational grazing of sheep, chickens, horses, ducks, geese, and guinea fowl.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

This is an excellent opportunity for a poultry farmer interested in working alongside other farmers and selling eggs to an established customer base.

The landholders are looking to grow this robust farming operation by increasing chicken rotation throughout the orchard. The incoming farmer would need to provide their own flock of chickens, but there are three mobile ‘chicksaw’ chicken coops with chicken fencing on-site, which the farmer could use for rotating chickens across the property. The chickens would have ample access to space and would contribute to the ecology of the orchard through soil fertilization, alongside the other animals.

The incoming farmer could also access the market on-site to sell their eggs, meaning this opportunity comes with an established sales channel with loyal customers. The landholders are very open to discussing the arrangement for market access. They are excited to support the farmer’s business and have eggs produced on-site available at the market.

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate would have some knowledge or experience with operating a poultry operation for egg production. Ideally, the incoming farmer would be available to move the mobile coops near-daily and the wider chicken fencing every few days. There is no housing available on-site, so it would be best for the farmer to live locally or within comfortable commuting distance from the property.

The incoming farmer will be in consistent contact with the landholders and working within the established farming system, so open and clear communication and a desire to work well with others will be key for this opportunity.

This is a turn-key poultry operation with immediate access to land, infrastructure, and a market. Opportunities like this don’t come along often, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re interested!
