LAND OPPORTUNITY: 1+ acre for market garden or livestock – Kelowna, BC

Posted by Haley Schonhofer on October 03, 2024

We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

Centrally located in Kelowna in the Black Mountain area, this 1.25-acre farm offers an excellent opportunity to start or expand a market garden or livestock operation while staying close to town!

The available land is fully fenced and primarily flat, with one steep slope along the side of the property towards the road. For irrigation, there are two moveable tripod sprinklers that stem off a main hydrant, supplied by City of Kelowna. There is also access to a 100-amp electricity outlet.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The property is located within the Agricultural Land Reserve, and the landholders are open to several types of production. The area receives plenty of sunlight, although the soil will need to be amended and turned over before planting is possible.

The landholders are willing to discuss alternative methods of irrigation if the incoming farmer is interested in changing the current setup. The landholders might also add direct road access to the farming area, which would make access simpler for the incoming farmer. This is a flexible opportunity – there’s lots of room to discuss different ideas for land use on this property!

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will be a farmer who is experienced and able to transform this property into a thriving growing space! If the farmer is not interested in breaking ground, they are welcome to use the space to hold livestock, such as sheep, cows, or goats. Most equipment would have to be provided by the farmer, but the landholders have one tractor that they may be willing to share.

The farmer will be working in close proximity to the landholders’ home, so the ideal candidate will be considerate and respectful. Communication and agreeability will be key for this opportunity! The owners would also like a no- or low-spray operation, for the same reason.

There is no housing available on-site, but the proximity to central Kelowna means civic housing is available nearby. Land opportunities within the boundaries of a major city (with easy access to markets and resources) don’t come along often, so inquire now!
