LAND OPPORTUNITY: 1 acre for a Cherry or Peach Orchard – Oyama, BC

Posted by Haley Schonhofer on October 10, 2024

We always have new land opportunities coming into our inventory, some of which aren’t on our blog yet! Get in touch with a Land Matcher at bclmp@youngagrarians.org to learn about the latest opportunities and to access free B.C. Land Matching Program services in your region.

ABOUT THE LAND

Situated on a hillside with a stunning view of Wood Lake, this property in Oyama (near Lake Country) is ready to be transformed into a 1-acre cherry or peach orchard. The property is surrounded by orchards and located in the Agricultural Land Reserve, in the heart of tree-fruit country ideal for a new cherry or peach operation!

The land was previously home to a Christmas tree farm, and the landholders are excited to see it transformed. The majority of the available area is currently forested with a mix of Fir and Blue Spruce trees, and the landholders are willing to clear these remaining Christmas trees to help facilitate the transition of the land into an orchard.

The property is already fitted with irrigation and partial fencing, and the area receives plenty of sunlight. The majority of the parcel is flat, but there is also a steeper west-facing slope along one edge of the parcel. This west-facing slope is currently fallow, but the farming area could potentially be expanded to this space if needed.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

This opportunity comes with the convenience of a commercial water license (through the District of Lake Country), full cellular service coverage and access to electricity. The sloped area of the property is not fitted with irrigation, but the landholders are open to expanding the irrigation system if the incoming farmer would like make use of this space.

As they are keen to see the land transitioned into an orchard, the landholders would be happy to arrange a long-term lease to provide the incoming farmer with stability as they grow their business. The landholders are also open to both organic and conventional farming practices. The incoming farmer will enjoy close proximity to markets and customers, and the landholders would be pleased to provide guidance on the property and surrounding area!

ABOUT THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

This is a great opportunity for a farmer who is experienced in tree fruit management and looking to expand or start a new cherry or peach orchard. The ideal candidate will be prepared to procure and grow new trees on the property.

There are no farm buildings or tools available on-site, so the incoming farmer will need to have access to their own storage and transportation of materials. The ideal candidate would also have external living arrangements, as there is no housing available on the farm. Luckily, the property is located within short commuting distance to Lake Country and Vernon, meaning close proximity to housing opportunities and markets.

If you’re interested in establishing a cherry or peach orchard on this beautifully scenic property, don’t hesitate to get in touch!
