Join the Haskap Alberta Association for their 2nd Annual Grower Day! Learn about how to manage and monitor the health of a haskap orchard and how to work with other producers to market these amazing berries. This jam packed day will be the perfect opportunity to learn about how to grow haskaps in Alberta and to connect with other producers.

Speaker Details

Craig Toth | Edmonton and District Beekeeping Association

Craig has been studying and working with bees for over 13 years in the Sturgeon County area. He is the president of the Edmonton and District Beekeeping Association. In the winter months he teaches honey bee beekeeping courses and throughout the summer he produces and raises new bee hives for new and experienced beekeepers, while focusing on honey bee colony health, queen breeding and honey production.

Joel Williams | Integrated Soils 

Joel Williams is an independent plant and soil health educator, a healthy soils advocate and presenter on soil biology, plant nutrition and integrated approaches of agroecological farming. He has a keen interest in managing plant diversity, soil microbial ecology and plant and soil nutrition to optimize soil function and crop immunity. Joel’s session will focus on optimizing soil health in haskap orchards. He’ll talk about:

  • understanding the role of soil biology toward nutrient supply and crop production,
  • leveraging existing soil fertility and optimizing purchased inputs
  • managing disease, insects and weed pressure as an integrated nutritional and biological approach toward plant health

North 49 Fruit Corporation

North 49 Fruit Corporation provides quality haskaps and processed fruit products directly from shareholder producers to domestic and global customers. They maintain a secure, safe and consistent supply of quality haskaps for their customers within a collaborative system that enables them to maintain ecologically, socially and financially stable orchards. Their Canadian producer shareholders adhere to national production and primary process food safety practices for producing high quality and safe fruit. All secondary processing is completed in CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) registered facilities. This session will focus on how North 49 went from individual growers all looking for markets to a collaborative producer owned marketing corporation.
